FLASHBACK****
I was sitting on my back deck, waiting for Fletcher to come pick me up. We were going to go on his boat, have a picnic and maybe go for a dip. It was late august and man was it hot. I met Fletch at the River Club and as we got on the boat he looked nervous. I tried to break the tension.
“You nervous tiger? What you’ve never seen a boat before, or better yet a girl on a boat?” I giggled as I saw him smirk. He gestured to the boat.
“After you m’lady” he smirked at me and I swore I saw him blush. He never got nervous why was he nervous? It was just me! Plain old Crash! I just giggled and got on.
We spent the day soaking up the sun and talking about everything and nothing at the same time. Life, death and everything in between. He stopped the boat and we sat on the bottom of his ten footer and looked off in the distance. He smiled at me as he plled out two fishing rods.
“What are those for?” I asked? He never really fished off his boat.
“We are going fish for ducks!” He looked excited. I was really confused. He saw me with the wondering look on my face.
“Ser- the duck race was last night they are all over the river! Don’t you wanna catch some?” I finally got what he was talking about. Every year the town has a fundraiser where you can buy a duck and they write your number on the bottom of your plastic duck. They drop them all in the river and the first one to get to the finish line wins a bunch of money. They never cleaned up all the ducks. People liked to keep them anyway. So there we were two fourteen year olds fishing for plastic ducks. We laughed and finally sat back on the bottom of the boat. Fletcher laid out some towels and we just sat in silence. Until h Fletcher sat up.
“Crash I have uh somethingtotellyou...” He mumbled all once.
“What? Gorton spit it out would ya?” I answered a little snippy he never was good with confessions. He turned facing me. I was still on my back laying on the towels. He looked at me. He looked so innocent and so beautiful. He leaned down and brushed the hair out of my face and carefully sat me up.
“Crash- I like you and I’ve never felt anything like what we have.” His words shocked me we were best friends not lovers. Yeah he was cute, nice, hilarious. Oh my god Crash I thought to myself. Calm your stupid girly hormones.
“I don’t know why your doing this Fletcher. Your ruining everything.” I simply stated.
“What am I ruining?” he asked. He was right. But I couldn’t do this not here not now. “We are making sense now. Making us official instead of going on play dates that our parents used to set up for us. We’ll go on real dates. Crash we will be real.” I was starting to believe him. He seemed crazy and wild and he knew I couldn’t resist an adventure. “It will be me and you Ser. Just me and you think of how wild that will be. Just like always. Take my offer.” he rubbed his thumb on my cheek and I closed my eyes inhaled and then looked at him. He was wild. So I dove in straight in head first right then and there I kissed Fletcher Gorton for the first time in fourteen years. I felt him smile and deepen the kiss. I brought my arms around his neck and they went through his hair. This was crazy. What will Shawn think? Or my best friend Carrie? Wait a second. I pulled out of the kiss. Fetcher looked at me and he ran his hand through his brown hair.
“Shit. Fletch what are we doing?” I looked up at him. What would we tell our parents. They might not like the sexual tension between the family friends.
“I’m sorry Crash I don’t know. Your smile just makes me want to jump of a cliff.” he blushed and looked down to his lap.
“We can do this Fletch. It’s just going to be complicated.” And thats what it was. We didn’t tell anyone that summer was just us. Just like he promised. We’d go sneak out to get ice cream or midnight walks on the beach. The perks of living in walking distance from the tides. We didn’t know what we were thinking. That was the problem.
School had started up in the fall and Fletcher and I continued our secret relationship. I don’t know why we didn’t tell anyone. I guess we liked it all to ourselves.
There was a party tomorow night but I couldn’t go. I had gotten grounded so had Fletcher. We were going skateboarding at 2 in the morning. Mr. Gorton had an early meeting out of state and saw us on the way home. Anyway I had a ton of physics homework.
The next night I was sitting in my bedroom it was about 11:30. I was bored so I called Fletcher we always had good conversations and he made me happy. After four rings he picked up. I heard yelling in the background and blasting music.
“hey babe!” he yelled into the phone.
“hey whats up? Where are you its loud!” I wondered pulling my phone out from my ear.
“ Oh umm the twins are having a dance party with Ivy.” Wait...the twins were on a camping trip. With Mr.Gorton.
“Fletcher why are you lying to me.?” uh oh he did not. “Fletcher are you at that party?” why would he lie to me? I’m fine that he snuck out I’m just not saving his sorry ass. Mrs.Gorton’s light was still on. I could see there house.
“No Ser I’m in my room.” The likely hood was rare.
“Okay then wave to me through the window.” The line went silent. It was a few minutes before I spoke. “I thought you were better than this. I trusted you. I don’t care that your out, probably drinking, I don’t care you didn’t tell me so we could sneak out together. I’m mad because you lied and you know what Fletcher how can I trust you when you are lying about a stupid party!” I held back a tear. I ended the call and flopped onto my bed. This was just the beginning and I had no idea.
