~Aurora Smith~
It's been a few days since I Summoned Santia Corus, and I haven't Summoned her again the past five days. I'm too scared that she'll overpower me, and I'll die. Everyone tells me it's fine, and that she'd never do that. But really, is that the truth?
The speaker on my wall crackles to life, saying, "Private Message for Aurora Smith."
"Aurora Smith, ready to receive." I reply, saying the standard response.
"Aurora, you have been chosen to go to an Academy that specifically deals with Potentials. Most people do not have this choice, so should you choose to go, we shall explain everything." A feminine voice states simply.
"How is an Academy any different from a School?" I burst out, unable to contain it anymore. A million questions are running through my mind, and I try to bottle them up, but it's futile.
"There is only one Academy, Aurora. It's different because it has better things, and they're all adapted to training the Potentials. Potentials are people who have been Nominated to be the next Spirit Lord. This is normally done with a test. This year, the test will be a competition between the nominated Potentials."
"I want to know everything, but in person. I'll go." I state.
"Come to the Science Lab just along the riverbend outside, and if possible, bring Santia Corus." The lady says, before cutting the announcement.
I pull on my sneakers and begin to run towards the gate that separates us, as a community, from the other communities. There's the Magic Users/Summoners, Laborers, Technology People, Writers, Farmers, so on and so forth.
"Santia, come to me!" I command, concentrating on my wrist and Santia herself. Ancient spells spill out of my mouth like a waterfall, and I can do nothing to stop it, just watch, bewildered, in a corner of my mind, as I create a magic circle as big as a house. There is eight rings- the highest class of a magic circle possible, and it has about a thousand ancient runes, each glowing gold, and peeling off of the circle. The rings are in the rainbow order, each having a different colored fire. The most inner circle is silver, the runes bright against the warm silver color.
Santia appeared, saying, "What will you have me do, mistress?"
"Can I call you something other than Santia Corus? It sounds too formal and strange sometimes." I ask.
"Sure, why not? My real name is Sabrina. Call me Rina for short if you wish." She responds.
"You seem really modern. Your whole style, the way you talk..." I mumble as we walk the well-worn river path to the Science Lab.
"Yeah, it's a story for later." She replies, but not coldly.
"We're here. Shall I stay?"
"Yes, you should, Sabrina. They said to Summon you."
"Right. Best behavior?"
"Yup." Sabrina shakes my hand in agreement and drags me towards the lady standing there.
"Hello, Aurora. Hello, Santia Corus." The lady says, narrowing her eyes. "Please make yourself at home. Call me Isabelle."
"Oh, no, it's fine." Sabrina says, "I'll call you Lady Isabelle. It's much more fitting for a woman of such high title."
"And what shall I call you, Royal Elemental?" She responds, taken aback by Sabrina's kindness.
"You may call me Sabrina, or Rina for short." Sabrina smiles at her, and she smiles back. I feel lonely because I'm not part of this conversation.
"Oh! This is Elaine. Isn't she cute? I still can't believe she's been offered to be a Potential!" Isabelle gestures behind her. "I'm taking care of her for now."
"Hi! It's a pleasure to meet you," A bubbly little girl comes bounding out from behind Isabelle, giggling with delight. Her light blue dress swings left and right, her golden blond hair swaying with her body. She smiles, dimples showing on her pale, rosy cheeks.
"Aren't you just a little angel!" Sabrina looks back up at Isabelle. "She's adorable. Who's her parent's?"
"Oh... She's an orphan, but I'm trying to find her a nice home where she can be happy."The blithe little girl, oblivious to their conversation, remarks, "I can Summon! Can you?" Her innocent, clear blue eyes look directly into mine, and I grin.
"Yup!" I say with a wink. She skips to a corner, smiling.
"I'm going to try and Summon. No one that I know or have heard of can Summon a Spirit called Timira Futura. I hear that she won't ever die! That means you can always Summon her until you die! She can tell the future!" Elaine calls over her shoulder. "And then, I'll have her read your future!"
I laugh until my stomach hurts, but then I get serious. I notice Isabelle and Sabrina still having a quiet conversation.
"Umm... Isabelle? Can you tell us everything? Explain why this is happening. I don't need to know what the activity is, but at least tell me why I'm going through all of this. From the Beginning. How it all started," I interrupt, and their smiles slide off of their faces.
"Sabrina, I have to ask... Do you remember what you did in the Beginning? No one knows the exact story." Isabelle stares at Sabrina, waiting for an answer.
"I... yes, I do. The Change began with me, you know." She murmurs, sounding wistful.
"You don't have to say..."
"No, I have to face my past sometime." Sabrina muses. "Now would be a good time, I suppose. About a thousand or so years ago, the first Spirit was Summoned, and that was me. The Summoner was not powerful enough to control me, and so I wreaked havoc over the world." Sabrina could not bear to continue.
"Our world became dystopian. She changed us, pulled us into sectors, and we just could not forgive her. So we tried to Summon her," Isabelle finished. "Sabrina, I mean no offense when I say that you changed the world... for the worse," Isabelle says kindly, her tone softening.
"I understand." Sabrina bows her head in embarrassment.
"I shall do everything I can to help save the world from the mess I created."
"Good, for that is what we need you to do. Enter the Academy. So, the test was the Maze and the Mirror. Belle will be accompanying you, she also passed. At the Academy, you will be tested for your rank... and enter a certain event in which the winner gets something... good." Isabelle explains.
"We understand. We shall enter and we shall win. When do we leave?" Sabrina and I say together, surprising ourselves.
"Great! Have everything ready by tomorrow afternoon." Isabelle smiles."See you then!" Sabrina says cheerfully, and we walk towards the door.
Just before we exit, Isabelle calls, "Wait! Aurora, let everyone see Sabrina, okay? Make her seem intimidating." I nod in response, and we leave the room.
"Sabrina, do you mind? Us making you seem intimidating?" I ask, worried for her feelings.
"Don't worry about it." She replies calmly.
"Are you sure?" I ask again to make sure that she's completely and utterly good with it.
"Hurry up!" Sabrina snaps, turning around. I gasp; she's so intimidating now. Though, to the whole school, what would she seem?
