Rain fell like lead from the skies.
Ryu took a quiet sip of coffee from his cup, glancing over the question on his homework for the umpteenth time, not taking the time to actually process it.
Ryu's friends, Rikuto and Hinata, were studying with him at their favourite coffee shop, which was a regular activity of theirs. Most times, they would be goofing off and getting the bare minimum done, but the quiet atmosphere was too good to disturb.
They would also usually be joined by Kei, but these days, she's not around.
It wasn't that she had left the group or anything, she was just...
Sigh.
Ryu didn't want to think about that at this moment. Not when he's so perfectly focused on his work instead.
Ryu, already teetering on the point of distraction, glanced to the opposite side of the coffee shop, to see more people he is friends with.
Haruka, a worker at the shop who had grown to be well acquainted with Ryu and his associates, was quietly talking with Rourou, a new member of their small group. Rourou was much younger than the others, but never bothered them with asking for help. He was already a genius anyway.
"I hope you guys don't mind," Rikuto suddenly spoke, directing the closely surrounding people's attention to him. "But I invited someone else to join our study session."
"That's fine." Hinata responded. "It's not some girl, though?"
"Of course not, my parents wouldn't let me go anywhere near a girl..." Rikuto softly chuckled.
A smirk tugged at Ryu's lips. "What, they worried you're gonna become a father?"
Hinata snorted, causing Rikuto's face to go red with embarrassment. Fuming, he said, "That was what I was implying, yes."
Ryu noticed Haruka looking over his shoulder at the trio with a smile before walking over. He leaned on the edge of the table with both hands as he famously did.
"Hey kiddos, what's so funny?"
"Rikuto's parents don't want him to bang." Ryu blurted, making Hinata snicker again.
Haruka blinked before making a disgusted expression. "Wise advice, I... guess."
Rikuto looked at Haruka with a rather innocent and confused look. "Mr. Haruka, what do you mean by that?"
"Ah- well, it's not good of me to discuss such things with youngins like you. But, I will say that my lover from my youthful days was-"
The three—possibly even Rourou, from what Ryu could hear—all groaned as they realized Haruka was going to ramble on again about his past, as he always manages to do.
And, like angels had sent a saviour down from heaven to save their ears from the dreadful stories, a person had entered the shop just then.
Everyone directed their attention to the new presence, who was currently closing their umbrella.
Rikuto suddenly stood up, bubbling with excitement.
"Mr. Nao! Hello!" He greeted, causing Nao to look at him with a sort of gentle acknowledgement that no one had ever seen before.
Hinata looked at Ryu with confusion, who returned the same look to her.
"Uh... hey, Rikuto. Is it really okay for me to join you guys? Because we usually study in the library and I take it that I'm not really popular with your crowd-"
"It should be fine. I know you're not all that bad."
Rikuto guided Nao over to the table, having him sit down beside him. Nao hesitantly pulled his material out of his backpack and placed it on the table.
Rikuto noticed the questioning looks of his friends and sighed. "You said you were fine with it."
"Well, yeah, but why..." Ryu lowered his voice to a whisper. "Him?"
"He's right here, Ryu." Rikuto frowned. "And him because he's practically my student now, and I'm teaching him to be more sociable. So be nice."
Nao nervously fiddled with his hands, staring down at his own lap.
Haruka's brows furrowed in thought.
"You like coffee, kiddo?" He asked.
Nao raised his head. "Caffeine's a drug, eh?"
"Certainly."
"Then why not."
Rikuto flashed Nao an unimpressed look. "With a response like that, I don't think I'll permit you to be drinking coffee during our sessions."
"Oh, come on!" Nao raised his hands in disbelief. "Don't deprave a man of his thrills!"
"If by 'thrills', you mean bad teeth and restless nights with early mornings, then I beg Rikuto to deprave you of thrills." Ryu put in, taking a sip from his cup.
Rikuto smirked proudly at Nao, who lightly elbowed him in response. Rikuto gave him an offended look before elbowing him back.
"Hey! That's not even!" Nao complained.
Rikuto rolled his eyes, picking up a pencil and leaning closer to Nao to look at his work.
"So, our first question is..."
The two began whispering amongst themselves, with Hinata and Haruka occupying themselves with their own activities again.
