A couple days later, when the boy comes in, something's off.

He's wearing a heavy tan coat and a pink scarf, even though it's summer, and he looks more flushed than usual.

Then he starts coughing, and you realize he must be sick.

Worry creases your brows.

He stops coughing.

"Are you okay?" you ask, generally concerned.

"Yeah, I'm fine, just a little sick is all. Been cold all morning."

"You need rest," you tell him.

"Yes, I know, I had some errands to run," he says.

"Alright, well would you like some tea or something?"

"You sell tea?" he asks.

"We... have a kettle,"

He smiles.

"If it's not too much trouble,"

"Of course not! Wait here!"

You head to the back kitchen and put a kettle on.

You grab a paper cup and a teabag, waiting anxiously for the water to boil.

You hated seeing him sick.

Being sick, you conclude, tastes like soy sauce, but not in the good way.

All that stuffiness draining into your throat makes it taste salty, like drinking thick soy sauce without anything to put it on.

Finally the water finishes boiling and you pour it into the paper cup, letting the teabag swirl around.

You pick it up and carry it out to him.

"You might wanna let it steep a little more! Oh, and be careful, it's hot!"

He smiles.

"How much?"

"Oh no! It's free! Don't worry!"

"You sure?"

You nod.

"Thank you for your kindness," he says softly.

"Of course."

"See you later."

"Bye."

He walks out of the shop, and you watch him go.

You hated seeing him sick, because you knew it made him unhappy.

If he was sad, it made you sad, and then it just felt like the whole world was weeping.
