Second to last chapter! Gotta finish posting before I go on vacation! (*゚▽゚*)
The metal can lid gives a tiny crack as you twist the can opener one last time, popping off the top lid to reveal the sticky sweet condensed milk inside.
Giving a little hum of delight, you scrape the contents into the tiny saucepan along with the other ingredients, coconut milk and such.
"Y/n, is it almost done?"
"Yeah Mitsuki, almost!" you call, stirring happily.
Everyone has reason to be in a good mood today. Why? Mitsuki is making a special treat to sell (and eat) today. One she only makes every so often.
Sweet rice.
Delicious soft rice with the condensed milk/coconut milk mixture, giving it a lightly sweet, milky flavor that's just pure perfection. You can barely wait.
Once the rice is ready, you're the first one there, scooping a test taste into your mouth and giving a happy sigh as the delicious flavor melts onto your tongue.
You have to share this with Kurapika.
"Y/n!"
Speak of the devil-
You're out front in a flash, fluttering the curtain as you burst through the door, a whirlwind of flour dusted brown hair and hands sticky with condensed milk.
"Kurapika!"
Kurapika gives you a smile, raising an eyebrow.
"You sure are full of energy today, y/n," he comments.
"Mitsuki made sweet rice! Oh my god, you have to try it!"
He listens quietly, nodding as you chatter on about sweet rice, plus the (thankfully, mostly empty) jar of maraschino cherries you may or may not have accidentally smashed that morning.
Kurapika chuckles, pushing a lock of blonde hair that the lavender barrettes he wears didn't catch behind his ear.
"Alright, alright then y/n, I'll have to try this esteemed sweet rice. Bring enough for the both of us, I'll pay."
"Oh, you don't have to do that!" you assure him, "Mitsuki'll let me eat as much as I want!"
"Within reason!" Mitsuki calls from the kitchen, prompting you to chuckle nervously.
"Of course!" you say, laughing and sweatdropping a bit.
Your reaction has Kurapika laughing, a genuine laugh that makes his pretty face split into a happy smile, his arms wrapped around his stomach. You smile too. Beam, actually. Kurapika has a beautiful smile, and a beautiful laugh too, for that matter. It makes your heart light up to see it.
You pop into the kitchen for a second and bring back two plates of warm sweet rice, handing one to Kurapika.
"Cheers!" you cry, holding up your spoonful of rice.
"Cheers y/n."
Kurapika bumps his spoon against yours and you both take nice big bites, smiling widely at each other.
"This is delicious," he complements, "Really, very much so."
You bob your head enthusiastically is agreement. He takes another bite, you following suit. Soon you've both polished off your entire plates.
"Hahhh, that was yummy!" you say, patting your stomach, pleased.
"Hey y/n?"
"Hm?"
You look up and meet his eyes. He wears a soft expression.
"I found a lovely little spot at a meadow not far from here. Lots of tall grass, and trees. Would be a great place to watch the sunset, or stargaze."
You nod, interested.
"Say y/n, would you like to go on a picnic with me?"
~ 🍡 ~
That night you can't sleep. Your thoughts are keeping you awake, racing so fast you can't keep up.
Did Kurapika ask you out? Or are you just reading too much into the whole thing and he just meant to go as friends?
Either way, a picnic with Kurapika sounded like a dream to you. Any chance to spend time with the kind, beautiful blonde boy, you would take it. So of course, you accepted.
What a lucky girl you are, you muse.
Tomorrow you're going on a picnic with Kurapika.
Kurapika, your dear friend.
