Hunter

"What is it with that cab driver?" I ask the blond girl as she passes me to go to the bathroom. She looks at me and at my body. "I don't know what you're talking about. Isn't it bedtime already?" She asks me, smiling. Definitely not knowing who I am. How could it be, instead of being a man in my thirties, I'm back to being a teenager? "I want back," I say in a pleading voice. My head keeps driving me crazy thinking about this trip and the memories that are fading because of it. It's like they're playing a game with me, but not explaining the rules to me. "Back to where boy? Can I call your parents sometimes?" I could punch myself in the face, how stupid is she? Doesn't she know anything about what this cab does? Even though it's starting to look like they work for it.

Two men got up and stepped out of the café, but before I could find them they were gone. All I saw was a brake light from a cab. The cab. I missed him, shit. Now I have to wait for him to come back, but I also have to go back home. I have no place here, and I can't stay long in this bar. The woman doesn't take me seriously. She's gone before I can get any more information out of her.

Back on the way home, it feels like all my memories are fading from my mind. Just as happened when I went there and everything came back to me. It is as if there is a line that makes everything forget.

Late that night at home, I sneak into my room. Of course, my father caught me, which had many consequences. All my free time he took from me and a gift of a black eye. I really need to find a smarter way to sneak in. Why did I sneak in so late, even? My head hurts until I hit my pillow and the dreams start again, trying to turn me around to the right path. It feels like I can't figure out the right way.

I woke up that morning to a feeling of someone staring at me, "Son, wake up and go to school." I wonder why he is in my room. Looking at my dresser drawer, I see that my car keys and phone are gone. Stupid bastard, how can he just take them without telling me?

In a stupor, I get on my bike and ride a few blocks away until I arrive at Lucas' house, where I put my hand on the door. Suddenly, Stephanie's words pop back into my head. Words from the previous day. It was strange because I didn't remember arguing with my friend, but I did remember Stephanie's words. Exactly as if she had whispered them into my ear that morning, the words suddenly came in so clear.

"Knock," I hear as I run my fist over the wood of the door. Not long after my knock, I hear the door open, and I see Lucas standing with his backpack slung over his shoulder. "What are you doing here?" He asks, still not in his normal mood. "Father took my car and phone from me." He rolled his eyes. We get on our bikes together to leave for school. On the way, I start talking about what Stephanie said to me yesterday. "What's between Stephanie and you?" I ask him. When he suddenly starts laughing like I told a fantastic joke. "There's nothing. She's a freak," he says, though I don't get the feeling he's telling the truth. Normally he is more relaxed and not as tense as he is acting now.

"She told me to tell you to leave her alone." His face turns grim, "like I would want her. That chick is crazy." My eyes fall on his back, which is tense under his black T-shirt. Clearly, there is more to it than what he is telling me, "You don't have to lie to me, Lucas." Lucas stops in front of me without warning, almost causing me to fall off my bike. When my hands can finally release the brake and I come to a stop. "What's your problem, Hunter?" He asks me, so tense, I know he's mad as hell at me.

"I don't have a problem, Lucas, I just want to be a friend to you." Lucas ignores my words as he just cycles on as if nothing happened. I follow him for a while without passing him until we arrived at school. Where we see Stephanie standing next to her bike, fiddling with her bike lock. That old thing that is ready for the dumb, she wants to lock. Which makes absolutely no sense anyway. Who would want to steal that old piece of junk?

"Stephanie," I start, but Lucas is gone into the school before I can even stop him. He ran away from us as if his life depended on it. Stephanie turns to me with a face that betrays that she doesn't like me very much. Not the way she looked earlier during our date. "What did I do wrong to make you so angry?" I ask her first time hurt about her behavior. Now my best friend is angry with me as she is with me, and it feels like everything is falling apart.

"If you have to ask that, you're even crazier than I thought you were." She's gone before I can ask more. I don't understand what any of this means, or why I even want to know. She has changed so much in such a short time, as if a lifetime has already passed. Her behavior makes me even more interested than after our first date. She is no longer the shy mouse who crawls into her den every time a boy smiles at her.

That day was terrible with two people who just keep ignoring me, every class I had with Lucas he acted like he didn't even know me. When school finally ends, I take my bike, sighing. Before I leave, I look for Lucas' bike, but it is already gone.

I immediately leave for Luke's house, where I can ask him more about his behavior. When I get to his house, I see Stephanie's rusty bike leaning against the tree next to the driveway. My head spins and my heart beats fast as I see them both on his lawn talking to each other. It sounds like they are having a discussion that gets louder the closer I get. Before they could see me, I saw Luke take her in his arms and kiss her.
