Past Memory; 6th Grade

"Sir, can I go home now?" Sunoo pleaded, his eyes puffy and red from the number of tears he had already spilt.

The room was dark, only a small lamp on the ceiling was the only source of light.

"No kid, we still have to check a few things before you're ready to go," the police officer said, sighing as he sat back down in front of the boy.

Sunoo gulped a lump in his throat, his hands were shaking. But he had to hold on a little longer.

"Where were you on the 16th November at 4 PM?" the man asked as he looked up, his cold eyes scanning for Sunoo's.

It all had happened three days ago. The worst moment of his life.

"At h-home Sir" Sunoo answered in a little voice.

"Mhm" the office hummed, writing the answer down. The officer started to click his pen nervously, "Any witnesses of your statement?"

Sunoo barely knew what a witness meant, so he just continued to stare with big eyes at the man in front of him.

"Is there anyone who could confirm you were actually at home at that time?" the officer asked with a sigh again, leaning his back against the chair.

Sunoo shook his head. "No Sir", he answered quietly, which was the truth. His mother went away for a few days, and he had been home alone for a week now.

"Tell me, were you aware that your brother Jay had several suicide attempts?"

A single tear ran down Sunoo's cheek as he shook his head again.

"Of course not", the officer chuckled, "and tell me" he continued, the clicking of his pen getting louder, "why didn't you pick up the call from him at 3:35 PM?"

Sunoo should have picked up the call. But he didn't. He couldn't know it would have been the last time his brother would have talked to him. Would Jay still be here with him if he had picked up the call?

"I don't know", Sunoo sobbed, his hands covering his face. It was all too much, too overwhelming. So many guilty thoughts were eating him up, and he didn't know how to handle them.

Jay wasn't there anymore with him, and he felt like he had lost a part of himself that day aswell.

The clicking of the pen stopped suddenly. The elder man exhaled out loud and stood up.

"Then let me say it this way", he sighed, an eyebrow lifting, "you were the last person who could have stopped his attempt."

"No!" Sunoo cried, his sobs getting louder. The officer showed no comfort and couldn't care any less what the kid was going through.

The man picked up the staple of papers, and quickly went through the pictures of the dead body. There were no witnesses, no one who could testify something else.

"You're twelve years old, and your brother was eighteen. If you wanted, you could have stopped him".

It's my fault, Sunoo thought then. And that thought never left him since that day.

Present

Sunoo's slim fingers trailed over the keyboard, the sound of each note echoing the room. With quick motions, he moved his hands all over the piano.

Sunoo had learned how to stop the thoughts that hunted him, with music. It took him a while to find out, but life had been a bit more bearable since then. Music had helped him a lot. It quiets down the intrusive voice in his head. Just sometimes it still wasn't enough to still some thoughts.

"Great, now play the scale in C-major," his teacher asked, who was sitting beside him with crossed arms on his chest.

Sunoo straightened his back and proceeded to play effortlessly the right notes in order.

"Now in G-major but in triads" the elderly man continued, "3 octaves please"

Sunoo exhaled slightly and played again the request from his teacher, surprisingly without any mistakes.

"Good, I see that you have improved Mr. Kim" the teacher commented, "I believe there is something or someone that is cheering you up lately?"

Sunoo glanced surprised at the man sitting beside him. "Uhm, you think so?"

The man chuckled and smiled a little "You're aware that our moods influence the music we practice? I can clearly see your improvements"

"Ohh yeah" Sunoo just answered while thinking of something else, "you could be right".
