2. Watching

Finally, Casey stumbled over to where I stood against a wall. She was obviously wasted, her hair dark brown was a mess from too much dancing, her lipstick faded from too many sips of alcohol or too many intense kisses.

"Can we go now?" I yelled over the music. I was starting to get a headache, as well as the feeling that we were being watched carefully.

"I guess so. My feet are killing me," she whined.

"Your head will be too come tomorrow," I mumbled to myself, for once grateful for the blaring music. We walked out together then, or rather I walked and half pulled her alongside me. As we made our way out, I had the horrible feeling that we were being watched, and the hair on the back of my neck rose in anxiety.

We got in the first cab that stopped for us, and took it to the apartment we had together. Even at this ungodly hour, downtown Denver was still alive and fairly busy. When we reached our place, we paid the driver and I helped Casey inside and to the elevator.

As the doors began to slide shut, two boys rushed over, making it into the elevator before it was completely closed. I saw that it was our two neighbours, Calum and Ashton. They lived across the hall with their other roommate Michael, and they were pretty awesome guys.

"Hey Zoey, hi Casey," Calum smiled.

"Nice catch there," I gestured to the doors with a grin.

Ashton chuckled, his cheeks flushed from running. "Yeah, we're just good like that," he smirked, looking down at the floor. Calum nudged him with his elbow, wiggling his eyebrows, and I got the feeling that the blush in Ashton's cheeks wasn't from running.

"So," Calum looked back at me. "Is it your birthday?" he gesture to our outfits.

"Oh, yeah," l looked down at my tight clothes. "The big twenty-one. It was... interesting..." I shrugged. The elevator dinged, stopped it's ascent, and the doors silently opened. We walked out, Casey's arm slung over my shoulders.

"I see," he laughed, helping me guide the half-conscious girl beside me to our apartment. Her head killed to the side, resting on my shoulder, and she giggled a bit.

"Yeah, I decided to be the responsible one tonight," I laughed as we came to a stop in front of our door. Calum kept Casey up as I reached into my pocket and retrieved the key. As I unlocked the door, he decide it would be easier to carry Casey, so he picked her up bridal style. She quietly protested, but after a moment she stopped struggling and buried her face in his shoulder.

"You smell good," she muttered as he brought her inside. He chuckled, shaking his head slightly as he stopped, looking at me.

"Which room is hers?" he asked, gesturing to the two doors to our right. I pointed to the right one, and he entered, gently laying her down on the bed inside.

"Don't leave..." Casey pleaded softly as he straightened.

"Goodnight, Cas," he smiled. After a moment's hesitation he bent down and pressed a kiss to her forehead. After that, Calum walked out of her room, closing the door quietly behind him.

"Sorry about that Cal," I smiled apologetically.

"She must be pretty hammered," Ashton laughed from beside me.

I shrugged, debating whether I should say what was on my mind. "If you tell her I said this, I will kill you in your sleep," I began as I made up my mind. "But Casey kinda likes you Cal..."

"Really? Cause I like her too," he grinned.

"Well good. You two should go out some time," I winked.

"We'll see..." he looked at the floor. Was that blush on his cheeks?

"I think I'm going to get some rest. Thanks for helping."

"See you tomorrow maybe?" Ash said hopefully.

"Yeah. Of course," I smiled. "Night guys."

"Night Zoey," Calum said, making for the door.

"Happy birthday," Ashton said as he hugged me briefly. "Hope it was good," he whispered in my ear.

I smiled to them as they left, shutting the door behind them, before I collapsed on the couch. Now that they were gone and Cas was in her room, the apartment seemed lonely. On top of that, I felt like someone was watching me. It was weird, like if I were to look out the window I'd find a pair of eyes staring back at me. But when I looked I found nothing but darkness, broken only by the streetlight below.
