I could smell the shampoo and soured sweat lingering in the room, my hands clammy with the sticky air.
My parents haven't known where there once defenseless and beautifully perfect daughter has been for the past 5 years. The one they'd stored all of their fragile, little hopes in.
I don't know if they would be upset if they could see their once pink pumped, mini skirt wearing daughter now clad in combat boots and skinny jeans.
My once strawberry blonde and always curled hair, now hung choppily and board straight against my face. I'd like to believe they would accept me either way but I know them too well.
Their faces probably more aged now. Its been 5 years and their attention spans have probably long gone to another saddening cause by now. I miss very little of that life like I had a few years ago.
The bus that would take me to a safe house I missed 22 minutes ago so the alarms were activated as expected. I have 7 minutes to make my next move.
The airport I now hid in the corner of was dampened by perspiring, heavy breathing children and adults. I could feel their breaths hot against my skin.
I have to call him.
He'll help.
My fingers automatically dialed the number before second thoughts could deter me. His voice picked up the second ring. Its husky undertone that was ever present caught me off guard.
"Hello?"
My breathing stopped. They believed I had no weakness. But they were wrong. He was the grey area that clouded my black and white judgement.
"Hello?!?"
"Tyler?" my voice betrayed me.
Now it was his breath that caught.
"Merideth? Is it really you?"
His distrust had always helped me to admire him. To be honest I didn't need another reason.
"Yeah. I need your help. It seems I've gotten myself in some deep shit."
The laugh that followed answered any doubt I had. Back to the same old same old. Only I was completely different and my life was on the line. No pressure or anything.
