03 - the fortune
"I met Chief Swan's daughter today," I tell Mom as we work on making dinner, grilled chicken, and salad.
"Oh yeah? What's she like?" Mom asks, flipping over the chicken.
"She's fine."
"We should have them over for dinner. It would be good for Chief Swan to have something besides diner food for once." She suggests, looking over to me for confirmation.
"Yeah, we should." I agree. Chief Swan is a nice man, he goes fishing with my grandfather and keeps the town safe. Not that it's hard to keep Forks safe.
"Great, I'll invite them. What do you think they'd like? Maybe we should do Mexican food, like Stephanie does." Mom turns the stove off and grabs over my head getting out plates as I finish making our salads.
"Not everyone from Arizona eats Mexican, Mom. And Bella doesn't look like your average Arizonian, I mean she's as pale as the rest of us." I point out while grabbing our black cat off of the counter. "You know better."
"Well, good Mexican food never hurt anyone." She states, "Here's your plate."

Clattering into Trig, and ripping off my raincoat, I catch Edward burning holes into me. Most likely pissed about his sister offering him up as a tutor.
"Hey, I don't know what your sister said to you, but you don't need to tutor me." Walking up to him I say. "It's fine."
"So that's why she was taking so long yesterday? Running her mouth off to you?" He shifts in his seat, still looking rather uncomfortable in my presence. I've heard that it can be hard for foster kids to socialize, maybe that's his issue. "How's your essay going?"
"So you didn't know she volunteered you as a tutor but knew about my English assignment?" I laugh in annoyance, remembering why I've never bothered to know the Cullen kids before.
"We have the same teacher, and you'd been in the library. It was a wild guess." He shrugs, trying to play off his earlier sentence.
"Um, well I've read the book before, so it's not a hard assignment. And I like the material." I shrug before turning to my seat where Jessica is now staring at me.
"Cullen? Really?" She whispers. "I thought you didn't like him?"
Jessica still is bitter about him rejecting her sophomore year, and it shows. Despite the fact that she clearly is crushing on Mike Newton.
"I don't like him, Jessica. We were talking about homework." I correct her, thankful for Mr. Varner starting class and her dropping the subject.
However, I can't brush off the strange feeling of Edward Cullen. He's a jerk, don't get me wrong, but there's also something weird underneath his shallowness. Instead of an angel and demon on my shoulder, it's Jay and Teresa warning me against all teenage stupidity and that it's not worth my time. I suppose I'll curse Mr. Molina for this and myself for actually talking to him.
