There are worse things to do than spending your Friday night mopping up spilt drinks and popcorn. Peter had worked in the Stand-By Movie Theatre for a few years now, and he never quite got used to the rude teenagers who were frequent customers, or the gum that was plastered to every surface he touched. But, it was a good job, and it payed his way through college; he had to be grateful for that.

Peter was grateful for one customer in particular, but he couldn't think about her without blushing, or smiling, or both. So, he stopped, and focused on scraping the gum from underneath the seats. His favourite job.

He almost laughed out loud at his thoughts, but settled for grinning at the seat instead. He did like his job, despite its cons. Peter liked the atmosphere, the excitement on theme nights, the children who were adamant they wanted sweets and nothing else. He would even go as far as to say he loved it, but it was only working in the cinema. It wasn't permanent; he just had to pay his way through the science course he was studying.

"Dude, you missed a spot." The group of teenage boys snickered behind him as they settled for the next film. Peter resisted rolling his eyes and put on an over-exaggerated façade of charm.

"Yeah? Care to point it out for me?" Peter said, smiling at them over the seats.

"Right...there!" One said, throwing popcorn on the ground.

Peter gritted his teeth, knowing him or one of his friends were going to have to clean that up later. He tried in a calm tone, "Thank you for pointing that out, enjoy your film."

He got up and walked out of the swinging door into the brightly lit hall that was decorated with vintage movie poster signs and red velvet theatre furniture. There was lights scattered on the tiled ceiling and the grey carpet beneath his feet crunched with popcorn as he walked. The sound was rather comforting to Peter.

He stepped up behind the counter and immediately began serving people. The smell of popcorn wafted around him as he waited patiently for customers to order and handed them their change with a smile.

The evening moved fast as did every Fairy Tale Friday. SB (Stand-By) was notorious for their themed days and Fridays were always Peter's favourite. Not just because a certain someone always came on those days, but also because the atmosphere was always so light and cheerful, as opposed to Wrangle Wednesdays, where they featured action films. However, nothing was as bad as Thriller Thursdays, as amusing as it was listening to everyone panicking over the film. It always brought the strangest people to the theatre.

After serving the first batch of customers, Peter found himself glancing at the clock, wondering where she was. She was usually one of the first to order her ticket, so Peter was curious...and slightly concerned.

His worry vanished, however, when he saw a mint green bicycle pull up in front of the theatre. The handlebars had tassels dangling from them that softly whacked against the wicker basket as she propped it up against the cinema window. She took her helmet off, letting her long curly strands of brown tumble out from the plastic and spread down her back, past her waist. Placing the helmet in the basket, she pushed the cinema door open and entered.

Peter smiled as she walked up to the counter.

"Hello, Wendy."
