Peter didn't know how to feel that next Friday. He had been fretting all week and had considered every possible way of contacting Wendy and ensuring she was okay. But the only plausible idea was messaging her on FaceBook, which Peter soon realised she didn't have. In fact, she didn't have any social networking sites. In a sense, it fit in with her personality - she didn't seem like the type to be documenting her every move or taking pictures and sharing them.
So, he was very much so looking forward to his shift on Friday night. He found himself hoping that Wendy would return. Perhaps he would remedy this lack of communication problem. Maybe, possibly. If he found the will to, then he would, but for now he just wanted to make sure she was okay.
And when he saw that mint green bicycle rest against the cinema window, the relief he felt was indescribable. He felt like the world had been lifted off his shoulders as she took off her helmet, letting her hair flow down.
"Look, there's your girl," Chip said, like Peter hadn't already spotted her. He grinned as she pushed open the door, her blue eyes meeting his, making his insides melt.
"Hi, Wendy," he murmured, a light pink coating his cheeks as she fiddled with her blouse.
"Hi," she said, fishing through her messenger bag. Peter took the opportunity to take in her pale skin, which had a slight flush now, whether from the cold or his presence, he didn't know. He hoped she was as affected by his presence as he was by hers. Her big blue eyes scanned the board above his head as a dainty fingernail, covered in pastel blue nail polish, ran along her teeth. She hummed to herself and then focused her attention back on Peter.
He bit his lip and quickly looked away, his cheeks on fire as he was caught staring. Peter heard Chip chuckle from beside them and discreetly stood on his toes before peeking back up at her face. Wendy was blushing just as much as he was, looking awfully nervous.
He took a deep breath and pulled his head up, smiling at her face. "What- what can I get you, Wendy?"
"Um - can I have a ticket to Mulan, please. Oh and, um, a Diet Coke?"
Peter typed in her order and Chip went to work, leaving the two to stand in silence. He struggled over what to say, swallowing too often and too hard, before he tried for conversation.
"Um, how are you, Wendy?" He asked, picking at the counter.
She looked startled; this was one of the first times he had taken their conversation further than the usual greetings. "I- I"m fine, Peter. How are you?"
Peter smiled at her still blushing face and sparkling eyes. "I'm good, really good. We missed you last week."
He kicked himself for just letting that slip past, and he seriously felt like banging his head against the counter when the colour drained from her face. Chip thankfully came back just then and Wendy awkwardly juggled her order and ticket. Saving time, he ripped it in half before she had even left the counter, grinning at her when she shyly took it from him.
"Bye guys," she whispered, shakily. Wendy turned and disappeared through the doors. Peter pocketed the other half of her ticket once she was out of sight.
Peter watched her go, seriously contemplating burying his head in the popcorn. Why was he so stupid?
He hoped he hadn't scared her off.
