In the end, by the time Enid makes it to the recreation center that night, it is closed. So, just like whenever she wants to focus, she simply puts it in the back of her brain. After all, the next day was a game, and she had to focus. Despite the doll reappearing on the table of her bed, Enid was determined to give her all to the game.
Turns out, focusing didn't do her any good. The clock was ticking upward and they were behind way too many points. When time ran out, Enid still wrapped her arm around Divina and Bianca in a chipper attitude. "We'll get them next time!"
Everyone wanders home as soon as their bus arrives back at the school, but even as the sun sets, Enid simply pulls her hood up and walks back to their home field. Again, and again, she kicks and punts the ball into the goal, practically abusing it. Yet none of the kicks and movements felt correct after the loss of the day. "ARGHHHH", a cry of frustration finally rips itself from her throat as she plops onto the turf, leaning back on her palms.
"Such a beautiful sound." Enid looks up to see Wednesday standing in front of the goal. Yet again, the ghost showed up on the day the doll reappeared near Enid.
An excited grin greets Wednesday. "Howdy, hot dead girl."
"What are you doing? Giving up? So soon after declaring you have dreams?" Wednesday says, tone unmistakably mocking.
"No, I'm not, this is part of me chasing after my dreams and happiness", Enid explains, standing up and starting to roll the ball back and forth with one foot.
"Losing is part of you chasing after your dreams?" Wednesday raised an eyebrow and crossed her arms.
"No. No it's not", Enid grudgingly admits, pouting.
"Then aim at me. I dare you to try to hit me", Wednesday replied with a glint in her eye.
"WHAT?" Enid must've heard wrong, what person, even as a ghost would want a soccer ball deliberately kicked at them?
"Just do it." Wednesday commands.
Too tired and confused to refuse, Enid gives a half hearted kick. Wednesday doesn't flinch at all and throws the ball back. "Don't insult me."
"Fine!" Enid throws her hands up in the air and kicks the ball straight at Wednesday's chest in annoyance.
Faster than Enid's eyes can see, Wednesday has leapt backward, almost like a dance move.
"Again", Wednesday demands as she tosses the ball back.
Eventually Enid figures it out and falls into a rhythm. She is hard pressed to stop however, because Wednesday is absolutely stunning in the unconventional dance which she displays. Her footwork is magnificent, jumping and sliding back and forth in the same position as if she was ready to sword fight. In fact, even as Wednesday spun out of the way in a fancy twirl that Enid was certain was just to show off and prove that Enid would never hit her, Enid couldn't stop.
With every kick Enid got wilder and wilder, losing control and everything she had learned about soccer flying out of her mind. Finally, she hit the ball particularly hard after Wednesday literally jumped and did an air flip over the soccer ball when she aimed particularly low in an attempt to attack Wednesday's weakness (turns out it wasn't a weakness, Wednesday just preferred saving her energy by moving back and forth instead of jumping up and down). With that, Enid lost balance, falling flat on her back with a yelp.
"You should fence with my father. He would enjoy it. And it'd help with your balance", Enid sat up, disoriented. Shaking her head clear from the collision with the ground, Enid opened her mouth to question how fencing could possibly help her with soccer, but finds Wednesday has once again vanished. Enid curses the fact that ghosts have supernatural abilities that meant they could literally just ghost the conversation when they wanted, even in person.
