Jedediah had dinner ready when the Octavius family arrived. All four were silent (a normal thing for Casi, not so much for Harry and James). Michela had been informed of what happened. She felt bad for what happened, so she gave up her room so Octavius and Casi could sleep in there. She was fine sleeping in Jed's room.

Jed frowned, not liking to see them so down. "'Fter dinner, I can show y'all how to milk the cows."

"Sure," James mumbled.

Octavius sat near the gate, his eyes shut. He didn't notice Jed's new neighbor walking up to him until his voice rang out.

"Hey."

Octavius opened his eyes. "Hello."

"I'm Larry Daley. I just moved in next door."

"You don't seem like someone who would live out here."

"Neither do you."

"I'm staying with a friend for a while."

"Ah. I see. My son thought it would be cool to live out here, so we're giving it a shot."

"My sons love it here."

"What's your name?"

"Octavius."

Larry smiled. "Is everything okay?"

"Not really."

"What happened?"

"My house recently burned down. Luckily, no one was hurt, but it's stressful. My old neighbor is trying to sue me for endangering her, but she wasn't home when it happened."

"Oh wow. I'm sorry."

"I'm lucky that Jedediah was willing to house us. I don't know what we would do otherwise."

"I hope things work out for you."

"As do I. If not for me, for my boys."
