You land in a random field, Natasha still unconscious. You see the avengers tower in the distance, picking Nat up bridal style you make your way to the nearest road. You try hailing down a few cabs but none of them want to pick up a crazy lady with her dead friend. You decide you're going to have to walk about 7 miles carrying Natasha, "or you could just call a jet." You mutter to yourself ashamed of how long it took you to think of that. You lay Natasha down and in your earpiece ask for a jet.
About 2 minutes later Tony arrives and boards you all in. You land on the top of Stark towers and pick Natasha up rushing her to the medical bay. "BRUCE!" You tell before you've even got there, ""HELP."
You put Nat's limp body down on the table where you lay only yesterday.
"Please save her Bruce." You beg tears now threatening to pour down your cheeks.
"I will, but you have to do something with those stones, quickly. Leave her to me, go deal with your stuff."
You sniffled and walked out the door not wanting to leave her side.
"You promise you'll stay with her?"
"Promise."You take the stones to the basement where you were instructed by Tony. Thor waits for you,
"Ahh, Y/N."
"Thor, where the hell were you?"
"I was in Asgard."
"I don't care, I had to do your job for you and I can tell you I definitely don't get paid enough to do your job for you."
"What and you didn't enjoy it? Not even the slightest bit?"
"I didn't say that." You say sullen your face quickly changes into a wide grin "I loved it!" "It was soo cool."
He chuckles at your sudden mood change.
"Glad you enjoyed it Y/N, but I think you have something for me?"
"Yep," You say holding out the stones.
"I'll take these back to Asgard, they'll be safer." He says taking the stones from your hands, the stones now looking tiny in comparison. You make your way back up the many floors to the medical bay again. Nat had been moved into a room so you struggle finding her at first but when you do your hopes are crushed. You find Bruce sitting next to her bed leaning on it, Natasha still asleep.
"Bruce." You say softly.
"Is-is she going to die?"
He stands up and walks over to you, then guides you to sit down, you reach for her hand still vaguely warm.
"Y/N." Bruce starts.
"I had to restart her heart, but she'd been down for so long..."
A sob wracks through your body and you press your head to her hand, and them your hand on her cheek.
"I hadn't finished-" "There is still a good chance she'll wake up but we just don't know for how long. I've checked and there are no signs of brain damage, at least for now."
"I'll check up on her every hour, you can stay with her."
"Thank you Bruce." You say dismissing him."Nat," You whisper softly as if talking any louder would hurt her even more. You willed for her to open her eyes, it would be the perfect moment, like in the movies. Except this isn't the movies. You check the time it's very past your lunch time and you're starving. You go to reach for your bag to get your sandwich out but realise there is no bag, and there is no sandwich. Force of habit, you didn't get a chance to get a sandwich before you were called on some crazy mission, "ughh," you sigh, you then remember that you left your bag in the taxi. lucky it didn't have anything important in it, wasn't even a nice bag. Plus you have bigger worries than a bag.
You decide that leaving Nat to satisfy your hunger isn't a good trade, so you lay your head down on her stomach comforted by feeling her stomach rise and fall with her shallow breaths. You drift off to sleep.
You jolt awake to a knocking on the door, it opens and Peter Parker steps in holding a warm pot of macaroni cheese he hands it to you and tears spill down your cheek. "How could so much change in one day," You thought to yourself, the warm pot reminding you of the meal you shared and your amazing night yesterday.
"Hey, I-I'm sorry I didn't mean to-" "Do you want me to get you something else?" The flustered teenager asks. You chuckle at him,
"No, this is perfect."
"Oh okay, uhh I just thought you might be hungry."
"I was, thanks Peter."
"Your welcome." He says giving you a sympathetic smile. You wolf down your mac'n cheese and fall back to sleep. When you wake again Banner is fiddling around by Nat, clearly taking tests.
You lift your head up to face him,
"Sorry," he says louder than you were expecting.
"I tried to be quiet but I have to take her tests every six hours."
"What's the time?" You ask.
"Only 8pm."
"The others are in the lounge, I think you should go and sit with them. I'll stay here."
"I don't want to," you shake your head. "I want to stay with her."
"Respectfully Y/N, I wasn't asking." "You can't sit here for days on end mourning over someone who isn't even dead."
"What if she wakes up and I'm not there?" You ask.
"I'll tell her to go back to sleep and wake up when you're back." He jokes making you crack a small smile. You press the button to the 29th floor and wait for the elevator to zip you up. When you step out all the avengers turn to you and cheer,
"Congratulations Y/N, and thank you for your bravery."
"I- " You stutter. Tony guides you to a chair putting one arm around your shoulder and another on your arm. "She's gonna be alright." He whispers in your ear.
You sit down and zone out of the conversation, about ten minutes later you get up and run out the door only just making it to a bin before your macaroni made a reappearance. You leant against the wall to regain your strength and stood in the elevator deciding whether you should go down to the medical bay or up to the dorms. You step out at Nat's floor, hoping being in her room would provide some comfort, it doesn't. Everything seems out of place and it makes it seem like she's missing, really gone.
You sit on the bed and talk to yourself, "She's gonna be alright." You repeat Tony's words. The others must think your crazy being this affected by someone who isn't even dead, they must go through it all the time. The thing is maybe you are crazy? Ever since your son died your worst fear has become death, you worry about people close to you dying all the time and if you're being honest with yourself maybe that's reasonable you've had so many people close to you die, for your age you think it's quite the record. Both your parents died in a helicopter crash when you were only 12, your sister was kidnapped 8 years ago and the police declared her dead about 3 years ago, you still wonder to this day, what if she's still alive and everyone has given up on her. You'd prefer her to be dead than have survived 8 years of torture. And then your son. You don't think you will ever get over that one.You lie down flat on your back and you fall asleep quickly, exhausted from the eventful day. However, you wake up every few hours, your dreams plagued with nightmares.
