9 days later you are still sitting next to her hospital bed her eyes still closed. The panic has mostly gone away but been replaced with a heavy feeling in your stomach which you can't get rid of, you've barely eaten anything in the past few days. Peter comes to 'take your order' as he likes to call it, for breakfast lunch and dinner but you normally answer him with an "I'm not hungry." But even so he still brings you a sandwich or something cold in case you do get hungry. The other avengers rotate, visiting her everyday, none of them dare to move you though. All except Bruce.
"Right Y/N, move it. Get outside, take a walk, listen to the birds." "I don't care where you go or what you do as long as you don't morph into that chair."
Bruce is the only one that can make you smile, everyday he forces you outside for 2 hours, and to be honest you think it's helping, it clears you mind. You invite Clint on your walk today as he's the closest to Natasha.
"I've known her a while." "I was actually sent to kill her, but I could tell she was tired, she needed a chance. So I gave it to her, I brought her here and in my view she's one of the best we have." He says his eyes glassy with tears.
"How did you meet her?" He asks.
"She saved me from being abducted." You say with a shrug trying to keep things light.
"Funny though, it was only just over a fortnight ago and it feels like I've known her forever."
He nods his head in agreement,
"Yeah," he smirks "She has that effect on people."You walk around central park for another two hours before you head back to the compound. You stop in to check on Natasha but go up to the lounge and find nobody there. You walk over to the bar and pour yourself a big glass of red wine and take it to the couch, you flick on the television and watch whatever rubbish film comes up first. At the breaks you go to top up your glass, and you are just pouring out the last drops when Tony walks in rubbing his face.
"What's wrong?" You say giggling.
"Argument."
"With who?"
"Pepper."
"Ahhh, about what? Doesn't like your 'putting your life on the line everyday for America act?"
"That as well." "You're quite perky, Nat awake?"
"Nat's awake?!" You exclaim running towards the door. Tony puts a hand on your shoulder to stop you.
"No. Natasha is not awake yet." "How many drinks have you had?"
"But you said-"
"Y/N, how many drinks?" He asks annoyed at your avoidance of his question.
"Half the bottle."
"Don't lie Y/N, trust me I've been there. Drinking to hide the pain doesn't make anything better, you hear me? Natasha. Is. Not. Dead." He tells you sternly and you feel like a child.
"2 bottles."
"Of..." He interrogates you further.
"Red wine." You sit back down in front of the film you were still watching.
"I'm getting you a glass of water." He says running the tap and bringing it over swapping your wine glass.
He takes a seat next to you.
"I know you think I'm dramatic, all this for a friend I'm not, I promise." "I've had a lot of people die, and the pain of that." You shake your head.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" Tony asks.
"Nope." You say popping the 'p'.
"I like her Tony,"
"I know,"
"No, I like her." You say emphasising the like.
"Like, like like her?"
You grin at the mouthful of a sentence and nod. You finish the rest of the film in silence.About half an hour later Thor bursts in,
"SIX O'CLOCK, DRINKING TIME!" He says wielding his hammer he goes to the bar and starts mixing together a cocktail. You stand up and walk out.
"What's up with her?" Thor asks Tony, who responds with a shrug. You check on Nat who, to no surprise, is still asleep, you hold her hand for 15 minutes or so and then storm back into the lounge.
"I'll have one of them. Whatever that is."
"Y/N, I really don't think you should." Tony says.
"Yeah, me neither. It's the strongest shot known to man, even us Asgardians have trouble drinking it. Some people swear it could resurrect people." He chuckles.
"Perfect."
"Y/N." Tony says defeated knowing he can't stop you.
"It's not for me. Don't worry." You flash him a smile and he responds with a confused look.
"Right." You start, sitting on the countertop.
"What if we give this to Nat?" "It could wake her up."
"Oh god, she's gone completely loopy." Tony sighs.
"Uhhh, Y/N. It would probably kill her, I wouldn't believe the old Asgardian witches if I were you.""It might work." Bruce says standing by the corner of the room.
"How long have you been there for?"
"She's on the brink any way, injecting her with a strong alcoholic substance could either go one of two ways. Kickstarts her organs and brain, or does the complete opposite and sends her into complete liver failure."
"Does she have any family to consent to this?" Banner asks.
"She has a sister," You perk up remembering what she told you a few weeks back.
"Although they haven't spoken since they were kids. They're not even really related."
People puzzle at the idea but finally come to the decision that her true family are the avengers.
"I vote we do it." Clint says.
"I guess it's worth a shot." Tony.
"As long as everyone knows the risks, I'll make you one."
"Y/N?" Bruce looks at you.
"Yep," You strain cursing Natasha for putting you in this position. You, Clint, Tony, Bruce, Steve and finally Thor carrying a tiny shot in his hand all get in the lift. You stand there for the whole 30 second ride stiff as a board you feel something brush past your hand and you look down to see Clint's hand resting on the back of yours. You look up at him and he gives you a forced smile you smile back and he links his fingers around yours just for a second.
You step out, leading the way into Natasha's room and lean against her bed. You stroke her hair and put your face close to hers.
"Okay, I get it Natasha you got your payback." "But come on. All this over an ice cream?" You whisper shakily releasing a single tear.
"Thor, what's the best way of going about this, straight into the blood or into her stomach?" Banner asks,
"I- I don't know I'd say stomach but I have no medical evidence to back that up."
"I could either put a tube down her throat or set her up on an IV."
"Wait," You speak up, "If you put her on the IV it will only slowly go into her blood stream which would mean she wouldn't get the full shock from the shot but still means the alcohol would build up in her system still leaving the same chance of liver failure, I mean with either way there's still a high chance of death," You swallow hard at the possibility. "-but at least with the tube she has a better shot at survival.""She's got a point, tube it is." Banner says and everyone nods in agreement. You feel sick if this doesn't work now everyone will blame you, everyone including yourself, you were the one that made the final call. You stand back from the bed as far back as possible as you watch Banner insert a plastic tube into her.
"It's in position," "Thor." Banner says hand reaching for the shot. He pours it down and the world stops.
