Falling asleep with Enid facing her was strange to Wednesday, and more to see her actually sleeping through the phone. The scar marking her face was clearly visible since her hair was ruffled. It was surprising for Wednesday to see some other bruises on her face.
These bruises were visible when she called her first time through videocall. And she remembered that Enid hadn't had them when they departed their ways.
Wednesday grabbed her phone into her hand and pressed the mute button to not wake the girl up from her peaceful slumber. It was always astonishing to see anyone sleep peacefully, as Wednesday herself had trouble falling asleep, not that she would tell someone that.
The black-haired girl slowly made her way toward the bathroom to freshen up. Since school will resume in almost a month, it made her think why she even came this soon to the school. And another thing was that Enid wouldn't come for the next five days.
Slowly brushing her teeth, she saw that her hair wasn't as straight as always, since she fell asleep on her side, and possibly moved a few times. She took the brush and started straightening her hair while giving a peek at her phone once in a while to see if Enid woke up.
After that she made her way to the closet, looking for something comfortable and presentable, as she hadn't had much planned for this day. Suddenly, Thing appeared, walking from the outside.
'They are serving hot chocolate downstairs.' The hand signed, shaking the excess snow of himself.
"I suppose you forgot your glove," Wednesday asked, Thing shyly agreed with his fingers. Wednesday grabbed her clothes, along with a pair of gloves for herself and a beanie. "That's your problem, not mine."
Thing slowly tapped away to hide under the blanket, as Wednesday changed into her clothing, consisting of black checkered sweatpants, a plain black long-sleeved shirt, and a thick black hoodie with knife ornaments on the sleeves. She grabbed her phone from the bed, put on her beanie and gloves, and made her way out of the dorm, heading downstairs.
As she got into the quad, she saw a few more people arriving back into Nevermore with their suitcases. To say Nevermore had many students would be a lie.
She came to the dining hall, where a few people were eating breakfast. Wednesday took a plate and started putting some food onto her plate, like cabbage, ham, bread, and butter. She also grabbed a cup and filled it single-handedly with dark hot chocolate.
Finding a free seat was easy, but it was interrupted by someone.
"Hey Wednesday, come sit with me!" Yoko said, pointing at a free table, where she sat down. Wednesday followed her without a reply and sat in front of her. It didn't take Yoko a long time to spot Wednesday's phone and see the content on the already dimmed screen.
"Why are you st-" "You slept with Enid on videocall?!" Yoko asked, surprised. Wednesday nodded, taking a bite from the bread.
"And that outfit of yours...confusing times, am I right?" Yoko said, pointing out the sudden change in Wednesday over the few days.
"No." Wednesday sternly replied.
"O-kay...if you say so," Yoko said, and pointed at her phone. "So then, why do you have Enid on the phone, watching her sleep?"
"It would be rude to hang up without saying bye, no?" "See, already changed. The Wednesday I met a few months ago wouldn't even reply to me, but cut me in half." Yoko giggled, Wednesday staring t her.
"That's still an option." Wednesday calmly said, making Yoko not so hyperactive anymore.
They continued eating their breakfast, talking every now and then. As Wednesday finished, she stood up, bid Yoko farewells, and went outside towards the forest.
"W-Wednesday?" A sleepy voice was heard from her pocket. She took out her phone, and saw Enid awake, rubbing her eyes. She unmuted herself and looked at the phone.
"Morning Enid." "Good morning to you too," Enid said, her voice still raspy. "You didn't hang up on me?"
"No, but was about to when Yoko started to interrogate me on why am I still on a call with you," Wednesday said, seeing Enid frown. "But I would rather skin her alive."
That made Enid smile again. Wednesday saw Enid walking somewhere, so she thought she was going to the bathroom.
"I'll let you get ready," Wednesday said. "And...you can call me anytime."
"Aww, okay! I'll go eat something, and then I call!" Enid said cheerfully. "Love yaaa!"
Wednesday hung up and put her phone into her pocket. She got a slight tingling in her abdomen after Enid said what she said.
It meant nothing. It's how she talks to her friends. Wednesday thought, walking through the snowy forest. Thing climbed on her shoulder and started signing.
'You like her?' "What kind of question is that?" Wednesday snapped, having the urge to send him flying over the border.
'You would never pick a phone up, and now you slept with Enid on a call.' "And? Enid said she has done it many times with her other friends." Wednesday replied sternly. "Besides, it's just a one-time thing."
'You still keep lying to yourself. Just like you did with Tyl-' Wednesday grabbed him from her shoulder, and faced him, scaring him.
"Yes, I probably like Enid, but that's my thing! And you mention that monster once more, you'll be flying longer than now." Wednesday said and threw Thing hard towards the lake. He knew that he deserved it.
But Wednesday immediately thought about what she said.
Does SHE really like Enid?
The girl pulled out her phone to message Enid but saw some red on the snow she was walking. She started following the bloody trail, only to find herself at a murder scene.
There was a man, around who was no one, besides hundreds of nails. Wednesday looked around but saw nothing that would give some clues. She came closer to the man and saw he had a very thin arrow inside his heart.
She opened the camera on her phone and took pictures of the scene. But as she was taking pictures, she also saw a wallet poking out. Kneeling down and opening it, she immediately saw a card; a teacher's card.
Mr. Julius Knoogels
Nevermore Boarding School, Jericho
Mathematics
This year will be more interesting than I thought. Wednesday thought, looking at the school from afar. Then, Thing started tapping on her shoes, gaining her attention.
'There is another one.' Thing signed, Wednesday following him to the next scene, which was almost the same, except for the person. This time, it was a female who also had her wallet out.
Mrs. Ozy Gabe von Butch
Nevermore Boarding School, Jericho
Chemistry
"Weird. They are from Nevermore, but I haven't heard of them ever." Wednesday told Thing, taking photos of this crime scene as well. It was all strange; the nails were around the deceased body as well. The arrow was the same as before. And it was a Nevermore teacher.
"Thing," Wednesday ordered, still looking around. "Find me someone, anyone that knows something about the history of Nevermore and its missing students or teachers."
