There is a certain feeling someone gets when they finally make it home. It's a feeling of being able to breathe and feel that warm sense of familiarity. A comforting feeling. However Jennie was feeling anything but serenity.
Standing in her bedroom again felt odd. Too odd. There was an awkward twist in her chest, as if she was out of place. As if she was never meant to return.
Home no longer felt like home.
She gazed around, hoping to find any piece of her that made sense but all she could see were lies. She knew this world was no longer hers to be in. Such an unwelcoming feeling.
"Is something the matter?" A gentle voice made its presence known from the doorway. Jennie glanced over her shoulder, eyes sweeping over the concern in the soldier's golden eyes before she broke the odd link between the two by gazing back at the pictures pinned on her walls.
"It feels weird being back," Jennie admitted because it truly did. She could hear careful steps entering the room. Lisa has been too careful, too quiet around her as if she might hurt her but Jennie just knew Lisa could never and would never do such a thing.
"Your highness," Lisa hesitated, "I...I–," her tender voice sounded restrained. Jennie instantly turned around and found herself staring into eyes that looked so defeated. Jennie absolutely hated the sight. It pinched her chest uncomfortably.
She always found her senses heightened whenever Lisa was close. Or when she spoke, fought, smiled, laughed... okay, she admits, Lisa has yet to leave her mind. And, the last thing Jennie wanted to see was a broken brute.
"Don't," Jennie demanded. "Don't you blame yourself. What happened in that castle–" Lisa narrowed her eyes to the floor,
"Could have been prevented if–."
Jennie sighed, "What happened in that castle," Jennie tried again, "...happened. It was no one's fault but Ares himself." Lisa's fist clenched with the sound of his name. "You were protecting everybody. Everybody, Lisa! How could you have known I was in dang–." Lisa cut her off again. Her eyes met Jennie's and the golden light flickered.
"That is the problem. I should have known you were in danger." Jennie groaned,
"But why? Why do you have to put this responsibility on yourself?"
It was obvious that Lisa was hiding something. Jennie just wished she knew. Lisa stared at her for a moment and the air felt alive. As if maybe, just maybe Lisa was going to say something– anything to answer all of Jennie's unanswered questions. But in an instant, Lisa blinked away whatever was in her gaze before smirking and chuckling lightly. It was not genuine at all. It was quite forceful.
"Do you feel delighted torturing me with your constant questions, hybrid?"
Jennie crossed her arms with a small huff, "Yes because it seems you feel delighted in torturing me with your secrets!" She mocked using Lisa's accent but terribly. True amusement appeared in Lisa's eyes and perhaps that is what removed annoyance from Jennie's.
"I pray I do not sound that horrendous when I speak."
Jennie smirked playfully, "Unfortunately for you brute, you really do."
"Your highness? Commander? Shall we commence with our meeting?" Rosé spoke from outside the room. Jennie winced and looked at Lisa with pleading eyes,
"Please tell her to stop calling me that," Jennie said, earning her a light chuckle, a sound Jennie would dream about that same night (something she will refuse to admit). Lisa shrugged, her eyes remaining on Jennie as she took steps backwards towards the door. How can she look so damn attractive with such a simple action?
