The sun had rose and set twice, but to Niall it all felt the same, the day’s events seeping together into one. Not much had happened anyway, so it didn’t bother him; they were just two normal, easy days. Niall had forgotten that such a thing existed.
He was mostly left alone.
Harry had gone off into town in protest in the change of events, dashing out the front door, his jacket flying behind him.
“Not for long,” Harry had said, “I just… need this. I’ll be back, promise.”
Niall thought it was odd, Harry leaving right when he need him most, when he needed someone to help him get back on his feet after the impact of Liam’s sudden and dramatic departure. Instead Harry was the friend who stared down at him once some bully had knocked him down, gapping and eyes wide at what had just happened instead of lending a hand and doing something about it. Niall could hardly blame him though, knowing humans have their faults and problems.
It was just that Niall would rather focus on Harry’s instead of his own.
The morning of the third day Niall walked into the kitchen being greeted by an exchange of whispers between Louis and Zayn.
“Would you mind going to see if it’s there though? I know you don’t like going back there anymore than the rest of us but-,”
“I said I’d go get it, didn’t I? Let me leave before I change my mind again, yeah?”
“Alright, fine. But thanks. Heard the train ride’s a bit longer than it was before, so you should probably get going now. And before Niall has noticed you left-,”
“No worries, I already noticed.” Niall slipped around the corner and into their view. Louis heaved a sigh, his hand travelling to his forehead forcefully while Zayn began to falter.
“Niall, I’m sorry, but- I mean, Louis wants me to go see if there’s something at the old flat. I won’t be gone for long, I promise.” Niall blinked.
‘Yeah, that’s exactly what Harry said and he’s been missing for three days.’ His mind snapped at him, but his voice stayed silent.
“Hey,” Louis interrupted, “I’m not going anywhere. You still have me.” He flashed a smile and placed an arm around Niall’s shoulder which he politely shrugged off.
Louis hadn’t promised, and that made Niall feel a bit better.
“Okay, well, I’m going to catch the train.” Zayn said, muttering items he picked up off the table, “Key, key, more keys…”
“Zayn,” Niall grunted, trying to get his attention.
“Yeah?”
“Be careful out there, okay?”
Zayn looked down to the ground before answering with a nod.
“Yeah, okay. I will. ”
It was something he couldn’t promise, and Niall knew that, but it still pinched at him, afflicting his calloused mind.
