I could really ruin things by dialing this number. I have not heard from him since he left when I was only five. I only talk to my step mom. I had not realized he picked up till he spoke again.
-Hello?
K-Is this John Hilton?
-Yes? Who is asking?
K- (Deep Breath) It is your daughter.
-Katie?
K-Do you have any other daughters?
-Uh.. About that..
K- (What?) Dad? Answer that!
-Fine Katie! I do have another family! After I left you and your mother, I met someone.
K- (Rolls eyes. Great!) So you forgot about us?
-I'd never forgot about my Princess.
K-(Bull) If you didn't forget, then why didn't you ever call?
I have wanted to know that for so long! He just left, without saying goodbye! It broke my heart! I found his number in one of mom's books a few months ago.
-(Silence) Your mom said you hated me and you never wanted to speak to me again. I have been a deadbeat dad!
K-Wait? What?
-Didn't you tell your mom that?
K- Dad, I did hate you for a while there. I am not going to lie. You walked out of my life at the age of 5! I looked up to you! I always believed that you never did nothing wrong. I felt like I was the reason why you left...
-Katie, It was never your fault! I left and I should not have! You were just a small child, you needed me and I was not there for you! I need to make it up to you.
K-You can start by doing this one thing for me.
-Anything. What is it honey?
K- (Deep breath, here I go!) Mom.. well, she's been drinking a lot here recently! She gets mean and she kicked me out. She is mad because I'm moving in with my boyfriend and I don't want to go into business like you and her do. She needs help and only you can help me do this.
-She into drinking again?
K- Yes sir. That is what I said.
-(Sigh) I'll help. When do you need me down??
K- When can you be here?
- I just live 25 miles from your place.
K- (That took me back for a second.) I am at the Holiday Inn Express. Call me when you get here.
- Okay. I will be there soon.
K- Okay. Bye.
I hung up the phone and let out a frustrated sigh. I walked out to the living room area. Harry and all the guys were watching TV. His eyes met mine when I came into view. I went and sat down on his lap and snuggled into him.
"What's wrong babe?" He was concerned.
"I just called my dad.." I whispered.
"You never spoke of your father?" He questioned.
"He left me and my mom when I was only 5." It feels good to finally admit that!
"Why did you call him?" He asks.
"You saw my mom. He's the only one can help me get her help!" I cry out.
"Why's that?" He raises his eyebrows up, in confusion.
"She won't listen to me. She loves my dad so much that she'll listen to him, even though he left her all those years ago."
"When is your dad going to help?" He rubs my back, trying to soothe me.
"He's on his way. He should be here-" I was interrupted by my phone ringing. I looked at the caller id and it read his number. I picked it up quickly.
K- Hey.
J- Hey Katie. You told me to call when I am here and I'm out front.
K- Alright. I will be down in a few minutes.
J- Okay.
I hung up and hoisted myself off Harry's lap.
"He here?" Harry asks.
"Yepp. You want to come with?" I ask back.
"Sure let’s go." He takes my hand.
I am about to be face-to-face with the man who walked out of my life 13 years ago...
