~Hailey's POV~
————————————————————————Somewhere in Nebraska
We had run out of water a few hours ago. Our mouths dry and our lips cracked. We were in a small abandoned town in the middle of nowhere Nebraska; any drop of water dried up days ago. Our energy had also dried up days ago, almost to tired too take another step.
It was probably one of the hottest days we've ever experienced so far, that and the lack of water made everything unbearable. We were all spread out across the cracked road. Warren leaning against the open hood of an abandoned car, her hand on her knees as she tried to shake a drop of water out of her plastic canteen; nothing coming out of it even after the licked the rim. 10k layed spread out on his back across the road, stringing his bandana from his sweat and into his mouth. I grimaced as I watched him, laying the opposite direction of him. My face closer to his body. We layed like that in silence, not looking at eachother or saying a word. Too tired and thirsty to do anything but lay there miserably.
Cassandra crawled on her stomach towards an empter can, shaking it lazily above her mouth. But when nothing came out of it, she tossed ut back to the floor, turning to her back and leaning against the curb with a sigh. In the corner of a brick building, I could hear Doc pull his zipper up and walk towards us, holding an empty liter bottle in his hand. He sat down next to Cassandra, tossing the bottle in the opposite direction.
"I read somewhere that you can drink your own urine." He began. The thought of myself having to drink my own pee for water making my mouth feel and taste weird. "But all i'm pissin' is dust." Doc continued, putting his hand up to his forehead, patting away the beads of sweat falling down to his eyebrows.
Our bones ached, our heads hurt, and our mouths were dry. No matter what was going on in the world, it wasn't going to get us to move. Unless it was free water or a zombie-free utopia, we were going to lay here in the middle of the road in a small abandoned town in Nebraska for the rest of out lives.
Until Murphy came around the corner of a car, practically skipping around and messing with his buttons on his jacket. He pointed at Warren for a moment, his lips pulled up into a dramatic, thin smile.
"Water isn't gonna find you just sittin' there." Warren scolded back at him, her eyes low and her voce scratchy as she responded sarcastically,
"why are you so freakin' chipper?" I heard her say, as I wiped sweat from my forehead, squinting my eyes as the Nebraskan sun started to beam down harder onto us. The harsh rays boring into my skin, the feeling of sunburns soon etching up my legs and on my arms, the heat making everything on my body uncomfortable. I wanted to rip all my clothes off and just lay on the concrete naked just for a sliver of feeling comfortable. All of a sudden, breaking my train of thought, a rumbling feeling underneath me caused my fingers move slightly, my palms faced down on the ground. Soon a faint booming noise could be heard from off in the distance. The direction, unknown. It seeming to come from all around us. I thought I was just hearing things; the Nebraskan heat getting the best of me. Until I saw the others looking around for the source.
"Do y'all hear that?" Doc asked, standing up to get a better look. Deciding to check down alleyways and under cars. 10k sat up, propping himself on his elbows, looking at the group then down at me.
"What is it? Is it an earthquake." I shrugged in response, a dunno leaving my mouth as I stayed laying on my back looking up at 10k then to the dusty blue sky, then back to 10k. It was possible that it was an earthquake. I wouldn't even be suprised. We were in the middle of nowhere Nebraska after all."Um, guys!?" I moved my eyes to Murphy. Who was pointing in the opposite direction with wide eyes and a slighty open mouth, slowly stepping backwards. My eyebrows tuned in confusion wondering what could be so terrifying. But that's when I remembered....zombies. I turned my head in the direction he was pointing to see hundreds, millions, of zombies running towards us. My eyes went wide for a moment before falling. I sighed looking back to the others, who were all still, not moving an inch.
