"All I meant to say was if that's Susie's boundary and Tommy knew that before they got together then maybe this time is on him. Tommy didn't have to pull his gun on me," JJ said to Wolf while I trailed behind them.
I really wasn't listening. I was just looking forward to getting to the beach and finally getting some damn peace and quiet for the first time in four days. I was so sick of their voices at this point I could've punched them both in the throat.
The summer air had cooled down a lot since earlier in the afternoon and the closer we got to the beach, the more wind there was. My steps paused when my hair whipped across my face and I took a moment to use the hair elastic on my wrist to tie it back up in a bun.
"Yeah, but Susie should really learn better coping mechanisms and maybe shouldn't try arson to settle her problems. Tommy didn't mean it though, bud. He was just heightened," Wolf offered back from about ten feet in front of me and that's when I tuned them out completely.
They'd both been in too much therapy clearly. They could've psychoanalyzed a tree with enough time on their hands.
Ignoring the idiots, my thoughts faded to the girl from earlier and lingered there before JJ's voice was knocking me out of my trance, "What do you think, Styles?" He tried to get me to join in from where I trailed behind them but I answered him with a puff of smoke from my cigarette and a monotone, "Don't care."
He looked disappointed at my apathy but Wolf consoled him by giving him a pat on the back so rough it made his body bow forward and his feet to stumble over his boots, "Don't worry about him, kid. That's the most he's spoken in two days."
JJ looked at me over his shoulder but I kept my gaze fixed firmly on the smoke curling away from my cigarette and the green canopy above the trail we took across the sand dune that blocked Lake Huron.
"That's not true. He definitely said something to that girl earlier to make her look at him like she was a princess and he was a knight and this was a Disney movie," JJ taunted, trying to get a rise out of me but ultimately failing.
"A Disney movie? This wouldn't be Disney because he's more like Shrek," the words were barely out of Wolf's mouth before they were both guffawing so loud the poor fuckin' birds in the trees surrounding us took flight in alarm.
They watched all of the Shrek movies in the RV on the way here from Portland. It got to the point where half way into day two, I opted to ride my bike the rest of the way.
I'm surrounded by dipshits.
"She was Fiona when Shrek first rescues her and he still has the-" JJ was laughing so hard at this point he had to pause because he couldn't speak anymore, "-fuckin' knight's helmet on and she doesn't realize he's an ogre yet."
Now they were both boarder line tweaking the fuck out over how funny they thought it was. I could seriously see the tears streaming dramatically down their cheeks from where their steps began to stagger ahead.
