"There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper

and more hurtful than anything that bleeds."

― Laurell K. Hamilton

There's certain things in life that force you to develop physical responses.

These things wake you up from deep slumber, not enough to be any good in a fist fight but enough to be aware.

As the daughter of a mafia capo, a lot of things fall into that "certain" category.

A gunshot.
A broken scream.
A glass shattering.
A knock on a door.

That's what wakes me up, a knock on the front door.

I spent all of Saturday afternoon studying until three A.M. today, though I usually do that every Saturday, so it isn't really a great feat.

I check the clock: eight A.M.
Riccardo sometimes comes to see me after mass. Sometimes I make an appearance, sometimes I don't.
I don't like making the drive to SC every single week.
And when I do, I stir clear of Father, so he doesn't even notice I'm not there.

But he comes after ten, so maybe he didn't go to mass.
If Father finds out, he's as good as dead.

I kick off the sheets and scramble off bed. Palming the bed in search of my hair tie, I pad down the stairs as I tie it in a messy bun.

I rub my eyes as I unlock and open the door.

"Seriously, Riccardo, couldn't you have come, I don't know, after ten o'clock??? Did you loose your fucking keys??? Again???" I rub my eyes as I lean against the door. "Could you get in fucking faster?!"

I glance up. A pair of sapphire blue eyes -that could not possibly belong to my brother- meet mine.

Cazzo.

Arturo.

I knock on the door once, twice, three times, and wait. A couple of seconds later, she opens the door. "Seriously, Riccardo, couldn't you have come, I don't know, after ten o'clock? Did you loose your fucking keys? Again?" She rubs her eyes and leans against the door. "Could you get in fucking faster?!" It's then that she lifts her head.

Her eyes are wide as she stares at me in horror. She's wearing a tiny pair of pajama shorts and a matching shirt. She hugs her middle protectively.

She cocks her head to the side, leaning her whole body on the door frame, as something akin to realization settles in her eyes "You're gonna have to step back a little" She says while doing a shooing motion with her hands. "They're not gonna like it" She gestures to the elevator and sure enough two seconds later it's doors open, revealing an angry looking Sandro and his brother Saverio.

"Is everything OK?" Sandro asks.

"Everything is fine" I snap and push her trough the door, she's showing too much skin for my liking, I have to remind myself I can't kill them because they've seen her with little clothing. I'll have to make sure those cameras are removed. I slam the door shut.

"Whoa" She says as she wrenches herself from my hands as if my touch burns, she turns around and walks to the stairs, I stalk after her, going inside her room she tries to slam the door in my face but instead it slams against my open palm. "What are you doing here?" She asks as she ruffles trough her wardrobe.

"What? Now I cant visit my fiancée?"

"You've never visited her before, why start now?" She grabs a pair of red shorts and a dark blue t shirt, shooting me a glare she steps into the bathroom, I allow her this small mercy.  When she emerges she looks a little calmer. She takes a deep breath "Its too early for this, man"
