Chapter Two:

Carter entered the crowded shop scanning the area for her best friend's head of blonde hair. The aroma hit her as soon as she walked in the smell of coffee beans surrounding her nostrils making her mouth water at the concept of that coffee soon being hers. For a long time now Starbucks had been her escape from the real world, she was well aware that it was cliché of her to admit but the little coffee shop had always welcomed her when no one else wanted her.

She spotted her friend sat in their favorite spot by the far window nursing a mug of hot chocolate around her hands; her hair was splayed over her face, which made it hard for Carter to be sure it was her but then she spotted the small heart ring on her left hand; a gift from her father. And she immediately knew it was her; she made her way across the shop throwing her bag to the floor and sitting down opposite Caitlin.

As Caitlin looked up Carter was unsure what to say, she'd never seen her friend in such a state, her eyes were red and her makeup smudged tears were escaping from her eyes and falling off the tip of her nose. She sniffed wiping her jumper sleeve over her eyes.

"Caitlin what's wr-" Carter began but she was stopped by her friend shaking her head.

"Please don't speak let me be ok?" She pleaded, more tears falling from her eyes. Carter nodded shrugging her jacket off her shoulders and letting it rest on the back of the chair.

"I don't know how to tell you this." She sniffed again. "But we-we, well we can't be friends anymore Carter."

Carter felt her body go ridged as she processed her words. 'We can't be friends', but she didn't understand; she couldn't understand why after so long Caitlin was saying this now. She shook her head refusing to believe she was hearing what she was. Her eyes were filling up and she could feel her cheeks beginning to redden.

"No, no no no!" She cried, furiously wiping her eyes with her jacket sleeve. Caitlin only nodded confirming it.

"Why Caitlin why?" She sobbed bringing her hands to her mouth to muffle the noises threatening to escape. Caitlin sat opposite her crying more now.

"It doesn't matter why, we just can't be.. goodbye, Carter." She stood collected her things and ran from the shop leaving her drink on the table. It was still full Carter recognized this as a habit of her ex best friend's; she never could finish a drink.

Carter didn't know how long she sat there crying into her arms leant against the wooden table. By the time she moved her eyes were sore and aching and her face felt solid form dried tears. She stood quickly throwing her bag over her shoulder and making her way over to the bathroom.

She gazed into the mirror suddenly feeling very conscious about her weight and appearance she didn't like the way her cheek bones didn't stand out as much as Caitlin's did, she didn't like the way jaw line wasn't as defined as Caitlin's and she didn't like the way Caitlin's legs were clearly thinner than hers. She splashed her face the cold water sending shock through her entire body.

She left the bathroom only to walk straight into another door, the corner of the wood hitting her skull causing her to sway slightly and dizziness to occur. She held onto the wall for support blocking out the sound of somebody trying to communicate with her. She slid down the wall holding her head until she landed at the bottom her knees up to her chest. She looked at her hand; a warm trickle of blood was dripping down her fingers, the sight only made her state even worse.

"Oh my gosh you're bleeding I am so sorry!" The voice from above her apologized over and over. He bent down to Carter's level taking her hand in his left one and examining the cut for himself. He swore under his breath as he caught sight of the wound. He pulled Carter up by her hands steadying her weight with his own strength.

"You're going to need stitches come on lets get you to hospital." He spoke softly to her as he helped her walk out of the small corridor they were situated in.

"Wait." She stopped him, her arm placed across his chest. "I don't even know your name." She said earning a chuckle from the boy holding her up.

"I'm Niall."
