a strange invite

"red one-up shrooms! half price discount for the next hour! red one-up shrooms!"

the first voice i hear every morning is the market toad who always sells one up mushrooms, and he's always so loud that it constantly rings in my ear every day, a real pain in the backside.
however's it's a good way to wake me up as i'm not a morning person. my roomate however want to change that by shaking my bed after the market toad ever-so-loudly advertises his red mushrooms.

overall, it's a super busy morning.
"wakey wakey y/n! you'll be sleeping for hours if you just lay there! come on!" captain toad yanked the covers away from me and opened the curtains. i felt blind for a few seconds as he flashbanged me and probably gave me shellshock for the rest of my life.
"buzz off, captain. i'm getting up now!"

in the kitchen, captain toad already made me some breakfast which was the same every day. it was a bagel sliced in half with extra nutella, just how i loved it.
"thanks!" i managed to say, stuffing the bagel in my
mouth while savouring and drooling for the nutella.
"have you read the paper yet, y/n?" he asked me
"no, what's happened? anything new?"

"not particularly, but the lack of green mushrooms are increasing. the papertoads have written that it's probably from something like a draught that stops them from growing."

the difference between red mushrooms and green mushrooms are that red shrooms give you a one-up. they usually bring you back to health, and are used for medical reasons in the hospital.
however, green mushrooms are much more useful. they give you a feel of immunity, almost like an extra life. there's been a recent lack of these in growing and the toads are trying to find out why.

"oh, by the way," captain toad exclaimed.
"what's up?" i curiously lifted my head, my mouth literally covered in nutella. i quickly wiped my mouth and sheepishly licked my lips.

"you've been called in for a meeting with princess peach, she has a quest for you apparently."

i shot out of my seat, and nearly dropped the heavenly breakfast.
"what?! princess toadstool herself wants a meeting with me?"
"well that's what the letter says!"
captain toad handed me an opened envelope with my name on it. i unfolded the paper after snatching it to myself and read aloud;

"y/n,
i should be grateful if you attend the mushroom castle by 11:15 AM for a meeting regarding recent events with the toad council and me. if you aren't to comply, we will find you ourselves as you are the only one who can guide the mushroom kingdom in this moment of precious time.

"what time is it now then?" i asked
"11:00"

quickly, i gathered what i had left of me and ran straight out the front door. captain toad shouted my name but i couldn't hear what for, and i likely didn't care. i ran as fast as i could, because who wouldn't want to be on time for a meeting with princess toadstool herself?

i pushed past the busy day ahead of me and the toads that were in the way. "coming through!" i shouted, running between and over every one of them. halfway through i began to get out of breath until i quickly remembered the reason i left anyway.

eventually, i made it to the castle.
