Evans needed to calm himself down. His hands were trembling, his heart racing.
The DCI watched from the distance at the Glasgow tactical team scattered into the field, in a practised dance. They had guns in place, dressed in black, and moving in silence.
They had arrived moments earlier and sat everything up. The moment they touched down in Glasgow, the Detectives were met by the Chief of Tactics, who told them his men were already in place.
They scanned the field, studied the landscape, and found entryways into the property without hinting at their presence. They didn't come through Evermore, instead bled into the property from neighbouring fields.
During the entire time, Evans kept ringing Emma, but the woman was not used to her phone and wouldn't pick up.
They got to the place, protected by the darkness and watching Evermore from above the hills.
"Everything okay?" Seb asked.
"Emma..." Chris let out a whisper. "She's not picking up."
"You want me to send someone down?"
Evans scratched his nose. They couldn't afford to disturb the scene or have anything that could tip Louis off. A leaf out of place, a tire track, or a house too quiet could smell like a set-up.
"No." Evans decided. "We'll wait."
He would come to regret that decision.
The clock marked 02h30 when a Jaguar came down the pathway to Evermore. Immediately, all eyes were on the vehicle.
We got action. A voice on the radio commented Jaguar. Black. Four individuals. Unable to identify. Hold.
The car rolled down the driveway slowly, with its lights turned off. It parked a little ways off.
Then, three people came out. Two from the back. One from the driver's seat.
On the move. The voice narrated. Two men. One woman.
Evans grabbed his binoculars and quickly identified Doniya, being held by his arm of Liam.
"That's Doniya Malik." He said to the Chief. "Next to her is Liam Payne. The third one is Xander Ritz."
The Chief grabbed his radio. "Identification confirmed. The woman is Doniya Malik. The two bogeys are Liam Payne and Xander Ritz."
Copy the voice on the radio added. One individual is still in the car.
"That has to be Louis," Evans added.
"We'll wait for him to leave." The Chief grabbed the radio. "Alpha team. Hold. Move on my command."
Roger that.
The DCI watched as Doniya and Liam walked to the house, while Xander made his way around. The pair stopped for a moment, while Xander disappeared out of sight. They stood there for what seemed forever, waiting for something to happen.
Minutes later, the dog barked.
Immediately, Evans grabbed his phone and tried Emma again. The phone rang as Doniya and Liam continued their march.
The phone rang still while they walked up to the door and when Liam knocked.
The dog kept barking.
"Pick up, Emma..." Evans wished through gritted teeth. "For fucks sake."
Emma wouldn't hear the phone, as she was too busy opening the door.
Evans's heart stopped for a second. It was easy math to make.
