I awoke to the sunlight filtering in through a slit in the drapes. Everything was tinted silver, and I kept trying to blink it away, to no avail. My head was buzzing as I tried to recall what happened the night before. When I came to realize exactly what had happened, I tried to make a run for the closed door. It was then that I realized that my legs were restrained by rope. I was tied to my bed in the cabin.
"Trying to go somewhere?"
I jumped at the sound of his voice. I turned to see Kade sitting in a dining chair that he had pulled up next to the bed. I tried to scoot away from him, but I couldn't.
"Untie me."
"Are you going to run?"
"No."
He raised an eyebrow and the ropes fell off my legs. I took the next second to run to the door. Once my feet hit the hardwood, I collapsed.
"Your legs are still weak," he said obvervantly. He scooped me into his arms, and I started to scream and hit him. "Deryn! Stop!"
"You killed my best friend!"
I received nothing but a laugh as he set me down on the bed again. I glared at him.
He shook his head. "She's not dead, Deryn."
I stared at him incredulously. "You threw her off the deck! I saw you!"
"Lower you voice and calm down."
"Why should I?"
Kade smiled grimly. "I may seem like the bad guy right now, but you're going to have to trust me when I tell you everything."
"What do you mean?"
He shrugged. "Are you hungry?"
"No."
"Would you like a shower?"
"Yes."
He nodded. "Then go take a shower and we'll discuss things afterward."
I frowned at him as he left the room, shutting the door behind him. I stood up and paused for a second, testing my balance. What could he have meant? What is there to discuss? The fact that he's claiming he didn't kill Winter? I took a step forward, and found that I could walk, so I started gathering my clothing to change into.
I should have been livid with Kade, and I should have been terrified of him, but I wasn't. I couldn't find any emotion to feel. My mind was cloudy and it felt odd to think straight. My hand reached for the knob to turn the hot water on. A nice long shower would definitely help me straighten my thoughts.
I undressed and stepped in, letting the hot water work the kinks out of my muscles. I let out a soft groan as my back went numb, and I pressed my forehead against the shower wall. I bathed myself and got out, drying off and slipping into a pair of pajamas, because I didn't really feel like getting dressed today.
The bedroom door was still closed as Kade had left it. I furrowed my eyebrows and sat back down on the bed, hugging my knees to my chest. I rested my chin on them, and shut my eyes. What was Kade even doing here? Thoughts racked around my brain as I tried to make connections, but it was no use. I was just as clueless as I was when I woke up.
There was a soft knock on the door, and Kade murmured my name. How was I able to hear him when his voice was so low? I mumbled for him to come in, and he cracked the door open.
"Are you okay?" he asked, not looking at me, but instead, looking at the floor.
I shrugged, even if he didn't see it. "Not really. I'm lost and confused, so..." I trailed off and looked at him. He opened the door wider and stepped inside, shutting the door behind him.
