Her sharp fingernails dug into the oak desk as she tried to recollect her thoughts. How could Kade ruin this for her? She's had this planned for eighteen years! Aileen shook her head and groaned, standing up and blowing out the candle that was illuminating the room.

How was Deryn going to look at her now? Surely Deryn thought that she was some kind of monster. What was even worse, was what Kade had planned for her to do. Aileen couldn't imagine Deryn going through with it, but again, she never knew. Especially now that Deryn possibly hates her.

Alieen gripped the hair at her temples and took a few deep breaths. She had to fix this, or better yet, stop Kade from following through with his plan. The future of Earth depended on it.

I stared off the deck at the mountains in the distance. My wings were put away for now as I leaned against the railing. Kade had told me that he wouldn't be able to leave if my feathers were reflecting light. It was sunny out today.

"Do you like coffee?" Kade called from the kitchen.

"Yeah."

"Okay, just checking."

He appeared by my side with a steaming cup in his hand. "Just to make you feel a little more human." He gave me his signature grin, and kissed my cheek.

"Thanks."

"Will you be okay here by yourself all day?"

I nodded. "Of course. I'll probably just fly around and test out my abilities and stuff."

He smiled. "Awesome." He was silent for a second. "I'll tell you where I've gone once I get back. I have some important... business to take care of."

"I'm sure you do."

He gave me another smile, hugged me, and jumped off the deck, flying off into the distance. Kade didn't tell me where he was going or why, but I didn't really mind. I had some plans of my own for the day.

I took a sip of my coffee, immediately noticing the difference in taste. My senses were a lot stronger now, and the taste was intensified. I smacked my lips, moving my tongue against them to keep testing this change. It was different, but I kind of liked it. The only problem was that it sat uncomfortably in my stomach, but Kade had warned me that that's just what human food and drink does to you. He said that if I were to consume it regularly, I'd get used to it.

I walked back inside and pulled on my boots, eager to get out of the house. In all honesty, staying just made me think about Aileen, and what she almost succeeded in doing less than two days ago. My mind pondered her motive. Kade had said that she didn't want me to suffer? It's not like I was going to be in pain for the rest of my existence. It was just for that short amount of time.

I shuddered at the memory. I remembered how it felt like my limbs were being torn from my body, and how my skin was stretching and distorting along with my bones. I gently squeezed and rubbed my arm to get the memory to fade.

I slipped my arms into a jacket and unfurled my wings. I smiled as the jacket's material folded around the small of my back, conforming around where my wings connected. It made things much easier knowing that I'd never have to cut up anything I wore.

I locked up the cabin and took off, running and plunging off the deck, similar to what Kade had done. I didn't bother putting my hair up, because I enjoyed the feeling of the wind through my locks. It's not like they didn't return to a perfectly styled position once I landed.

The air whooshed past me as I nose-dived, and I laughed with joy. I was so high up that I was merely a speck in the sky. The light glinted brightly off my wings, making difficult even for me to see. I didn't care.
