Together, Heather, Coral and I walked back to my house. I cautiously opened the door, not knowing what to expect. I glanced back at my sister, took a deep breath, and stepped inside.
The furniture was all back to normal, but there were still a few broken objects pushed away to the corner of the room.
"Looks like Dad cleaned up the house before he left for work." Heather stated. I nodded silently, looking around the room. I still felt uneasy, like there was still something dangerous in the house, but I dismissed the thought quickly, chiding myself at how paranoid I was getting.
Coral clapped her hands together. "All right. Pack up; we're leaving in ten minutes."
Heather and I glanced at each other before I cleared my throat. "Uh, Coral? What exactly do we pack? I'm guessing not a swimsuit."
Coral cracked a smile. "Just some food, water, and other essentials. Pack lightly or you won't be able to carry it all."
"Got it." I went upstairs in my room, and grabbed my backpack. I took out my binders and felt grateful that it was Friday. I wouldn't be missing too much school. I grabbed a small, light blanket, a flashlight, gloves and a hat in case it got cold. Running back downstairs into the kitchen, I took a few water bottles, and non-perishable food.
A few minutes later, Heather came downstairs carrying a backpack filled to the rim. I sighed dramatically and took the backpack from Heather. "I thought we agreed on essentials only," I reminded her.
Opening her backpack, I saw makeup bags and a camera. Glaring at Heather, I removed those items as I scolded her for packing useless things.
Once we were all packed up with everything we needed, I looked at Coral for guidance. "Where to next?"
Coral looked us over and gave me a sign of approval. "Well, we need to find a water source. Once we get a body of water that can meet our criteria, we'll go from there."
"And what exactly is our criteria?" Heather asked.
"We need a big body of water, like a lake, and it should be in a secluded area. I guess we have to find a place where we can use your powers without anyone seeing us. Does any place you know of ring a bell?"
Immediately, I thought of my secret area in the forest, the one I named Miracle Stream, where I first discovered my powers. But the place was sacred to me. Did I really want to show them it?
I chided myself at my sudden selfishness. What was I thinking? If bringing them to the stream was going to help me find my mom, what on earth am I waiting for?
"I have a spot," I announced, and Heather looks at me expectantly. "It's in the woods, by the park. I can show it to you."
"Great, let's go!" Heather said, jumping up and down. I glanced up at the sky, and saw that it was already starting to get dark. I came home at 3:00, just like a normal school day, and left for Will's house around 30 minutes later. I must've stayed at Will's house until 5:00, because the sun was starting its descent to the other side of the world.
"Just a minute," I said. "What time is it?"
"Around 6:30," Coral replied. We made eye contact and she knew what I was thinking. "It might be too late to leave now."
"Are you kidding me?" Heather shrieked. She turned to me, "Our mother is missing, and the only chance that we can still save her is if we follow those people who took the knife. If we wait until morning, it'll be too late!"
I sighed. Heather had a point. "Alright, let's go." With me in the lead, and Heather and Coral right behind me, I started the walk to the park. I kept glancing up at the sky, as if staring at it will make it stay bright. Sooner than I thought it would be, we were at the Miracle Stream.
Heather and Coral both looked around in amazement, and I felt the same as I did the first time I came here. A hush fell over us as we each felt the beauty of this place.
"I call it Miracle Stream," I whispered quietly, afraid that they would laugh at me. To my shock, both of them nodded, agreeing with my name.
I walked over to the stream and proceeded to take off my shoes and socks. Dangling my legs in the water, the fish came towards me again, looking excited to see me.
"Did you miss me?" I smiled. Coral and Heather walked over to me and also took off their shoes. We all sat side by side by the water's edge. The fish surrounded us three, becoming especially excited when they saw Coral, sensing another daughter of the sea. "What now?"
"Heather, you might want to step back," Coral said, then grabbed my arm. "We have to imagine where we want to go. Picture your mother in your head, and don't think of anything else. I'll do the same, though my place will be more specific, as I've done this before. Once we both have the picture imagined, we have to jump."
"Jump?"
"Yes. After that, follow my lead."
"Hello? What about me?" Heather asked from behind us.
Coral turned slightly towards Heather and said, "When we jump, you jump too. Hang on to me or your sister, and you'll be fine."
Heather nodded and we all closed our eyes.
I pictured my mother, with her brown hair like mine, and her soft, sweet smile. I pictured how she would always tuck me in at night, even when I was older, because she knew I liked it. I pictured her and my dad's loving gazes, and how we always got along so well. I picture her now, somewhere in the middle of a sea. I pictured her calling for me in my dreams, asking for help.
I heard something and opened my eyes for a second to look behind me. Someone was behind us in the bushes, but I couldn't see who. The figure stepped out just as Coral yelled "Jump!"
My jaw dropped, but Heather grabbed my hand as she jumped, dragging me along with her.
The last thing I saw was Will running towards me before we hit the stream and everything went black.
