Out & (kinda) About

Heading out of that dreadful therapy session, I walked straight out into the crisp morning air and began my sluggish trek. Apparently, all I had to my place holding name was ten dollars and a box of mints.
Might as well eat something besides hospital food. I thought to myself.
I was walking slowly, carefully studying strangers faces, hoping that in their frantic eyes, I'd see a flicker of recognition. But none. Zip. Nada.
I sighed and then groaned. What was one without memory to do? I looked up, and saw a sign. Mimi's Diner.
Hm, I thought, did I ever step foot in there?
I immediately pushed the thought away, knowing I had no idea what the answer was.
When I walked in, the tiny bell above the door had made a noise, acknowledging everyone of my entrance. To some, their eyes swept over me, and left, but to others I saw a glint of fear, which I couldn't really pinpoint.
I shrugged my shoulders and went to the bar and sat on a swivel. I looked around and noticed that it was a retro little place and very cute.
"Hi! I'm Barbara. Can I start you off with a drink?" After she was done talking she threw me this large smile that showed her pearly whites.
"Uh, yeah," I nodded. "Dr. Pepper would be great." She nodded.
"I'll be right back with that."
She left and I stayed there, skimming the menu. I need something under $10. And I saw that they had a beautiful looking cherry pie.
"You ready, hun?" She placed my drink down, clicking her pen.
"Yeah, the cherry pie." I pointed to the picture.
"Okay, your name?"
"Oh, uh," I sighed. "Jane."
"Alrighty, Jane. It'll be out in a minute." she gave me another dazzling smile before leaving me.
As she walked away, I saw that I was still getting some weird looks. I felt self conscious, and coughed while scooting closer to the counter.
"Jane?" A male voice called and I looked up.
"Here!" I said whilst waving my hand.
The boy came closer, and in his hand was the most glorious thing ever.
"You're Jane?" He said, skeptically before placing the plate down. I looked at him, hoping he'd say something else like that's not your name, silly! Or something. But all I got was a set of eyes full of annoyance.
"Well, yes. I said that, right?" I looked at him with an arched eyebrow. If you want to be sassy, so can I.
"Okay," he rolled his eyes and gave me the bill. "When you're done, leave the plate and take the bill to the front." He started walking away.
"Wait," I called. I slipped the ten into the slot.
He turned around. "What?"
Wow, I thought. Even if I could tip, I wouldn't for you.
"Could you take this, please..." I looked at his name tag. "Kai?" I smiled.
He looked really surprised, before covering it with a scowl. "Sure, whatever." He began to walk away again.
"Well, thanks!" I say to his back. He stops and shakes his head before continuing to the front.
I finally look down at the pie and scarf the heavenly goodness down my throat.
Barbara brings me a refill of my Dr. Pepper
"I wish I could give you a tip, you've been nothing but sweet. All I had was the ten that I gave for my pie." I shrugged my shoulders.
"Its alright doll," she smiles. "It's the thought that counts, right?" She took my plate before waving me off back into the somewhat busy streets.
I slip out again, the bells not letting me forget that. I sighed and then shivered, bringing my arms together.
I looked up and saw that I was only a few blocks away from that white-walled Hell.
"Damn," I said to myself. I didn't want to go back, but I had nowhere else to go. I sighed and shook my head before heading there. But then I see a familiar wave of hair.
"Hey Kai!" I chirped, stepping in next to him.
"Jane." He said, monotone.
"Where you off to?" I asked, looking forward, trying to make a friend in this god forsaken city.
"Home, where else?" He asked, annoyed.
"You act like I knew. I don't know you. And I'm sick of your attitude, what did I even do to you besides ask you to take my bill?" I looked him dead in the eye, aware of the fury I had in my own. "God, forget I asked you anything." I walked faster before going going to the nearest crosswalk.
"Well, where are you going?"
"To the hospital." I said, and then internally groaned. Why did I tell him the truth?
"Why?" He asked. This time, I actually took the time to study this Kai.
He was a nice height, probably around six foot or a little over. All I knew was that he towered over me and my five foot five inches. He had a chiseled jaw, that was also delicate in a sense. His eyes were a crystal blue, like looking into an ocean, and in this second, I was drowning.
"Hello? Earth to you?" Kai started to wave his hand in my face.
"Sorry, I was in deep thought." I muttered, looking across the street, waiting for the red hand to turn into that white walking man.
"I asked why you were going to the hospital?"
I sighed. "That's none of your business, really." I said and started to walk while the signal changed. I saw him though, in my peripheral and internally groaned.
"Well, I'll make you my business," he said while shrugging.
"Jackass, I do. Not. Know. You. Leave me alone!" I walked away, pretty sure steam was blowing out of my ears.
"That's what I expected from you." He said, and I stopped. He didn't say someone like you. But just you. He had to have known me, and who I was.
I studied this boy, Kai. And a series of thoughts ran though my head. Did he know me? Can he help me? And the most important question. Will I be able to go home?
"You know who I am?"
