Jacob had both his arms wrapped around Milly's torso as they lay on the couch, with her head resting on his chest. Embry was sitting cross-legged by their feet, with Quil sitting on the floor against the sofa. Milly's quiet giggles were the only sound in the living room as the TV played a loop of Mr. Bean episodes. To stay awake and continue her time with her closest friends before being forced to go home, she struggles to keep her fluttering eyes open. Although Jacob's chest vibrations mostly keep her awake, her eyes are growing tired.
The four had a comforting bond. Jacob had been worried about introducing Milly to his friends. She was almost something he had wanted to keep separate; he didn't want to share her attention with his two other best friends because he knew as soon as Quil and Embry met her, they would both be drawn to her like he was. There was something about her that pulled people in. Maybe it was the way she talked to her plants to make them feel less lonely or how her eyes were always gentle, never full of hatred or anger, and could calm any temper. There was so much about her that he loved. But seeing his two best friends playing around with Milly on the beach and listening to her excited giggles and screeches, he didn't know what he had been so worried about. He couldn't imagine anything better than hanging out with the three.
Quil and Embry had quickly grown attached to Milly in a fashion very similar to Jake's. They never even thought to be upset that she had invaded their friend group because both were so happy to see her every day. She fit with the group; she had brought the boys closer together, which they hadn't thought possible, and she brightened the room every time she visited. The four had grown incredibly close, and now that school was starting back up, they were worried about spending so much time apart. Jacob, Embry, and Quil would see each other every day at school, but unless Milly could convince Bella to drive her to the reservation, they would only see the Swan girl they were so fond of on the weekends.
Billy had noticed the way Embry and Quil had acted around Milly. Their behaviour was so similar to Jacob's. It seemed like all three boys gravitated towards Milly, their eyes constantly returning to her small figure or their hands reaching out to touch her in some way. He tried to convince himself that their behaviour was just due to Milly's joyous and innocent nature, but he knew the truth. Life was going to change for the youngest Swan very soon, and Billy would do everything he could to help her.
And that's exactly what he thought about when he went into the living room to see the group all half asleep on top of each other. A small smile creeps up on his face as he watches Embry's hand slowly loosen its grip on the remote, promptly dropping it on Quil's head.
The youngest boy snaps awake, blinking furiously and flailing his hands in an attempt to land a hit on the persecutor.
"W're 'is 'e-," he groans, getting one leg up on the couch and lifting himself.
At that point, the others were wide awake and clutching their stomachs as they laughed boisterously at the scene in front of them.
"Alright, alright," Billy chuckles, moving into the room and switching the volume off on the TV. "Quil, your mother is on her way for you and Embry."
