Things had been looking up for Milly. Her back was almost completely healed, and she was comfortable in the forest again.

She was staying at Billy and Jacob's house while her dad went to work. When Jacob went to school, Billy started to teach her. He started with the small things she could do with her powers. She had learned to look for auras around people and had made pages of notes in her journal about how to read them. Billy was patient and encouraging, guiding Milly through each step. Milly's progress with her powers was evident as she began to sense the emotions and intentions of those around her with increasing accuracy. She could feel the subtle shifts in energy and vibrations, allowing her to understand the true essence of people beyond their words or actions. With each passing day, her confidence grew, and she eagerly absorbed Billy's teachings. She couldn't help but feel grateful for his unwavering support and guidance, which fueled her determination to further explore the depths of her abilities.

She was going back to school soon. She had kept up with her learning and was going back into her sophomore year, with classes on her schedule from both the junior and senior timetables. Despite the excitement of seeing her friends, she couldn't help but feel a tinge of apprehension. The thought of navigating through a sea of emotions and intentions from her classmates and teachers made her both curious and slightly anxious. And, of course, Jasper wouldn't be there.

Billy and Sam had told her what they were. Cold ones. The same creatures massacred tribes in the stories she grew up with. Billy called them "vegetarians," but it was clear that he had doubts about their true nature.

Milly felt confused. She couldn't have expected them to tell her; that was their secret. But she was at their house. They protected her. Well, so she thought. Did they even know about the attack? She realised how much they could have cared for her if they were willing to leave her alone. They knew about her dependency issues, but they still abandoned her. She confided in them about her biggest fear, and then they turned their backs on her. Milly couldn't help but feel betrayed and hurt. She questioned whether their friendship was ever genuine or if it was all just a facade. It was a painful realisation that sometimes people aren't who they appear to be, even those closest to you.

Somehow, though, she still missed Jasper. She missed the way he made her laugh and the comfort she felt in his presence. Despite the pain he had caused, there was a part of her that longed for their connection to be restored. Milly couldn't help but wonder if there was a chance for forgiveness and rebuilding their friendship, or if it was time to let go and move on.

They weren't coming back, and Milly had to accept that. She realised that holding onto the hope of their friendship returning was only prolonging her own healing process. It was time for her to focus on herself and surround herself with people who truly cared about her well-being.

Milly was standing next to a large tree in the forest. Her hands were against its bark, eyes closed.
