She had not shown any signs of waking up after being in a coma for two days. Get Well Soon cards from concerned visitors were piled high in her hospital room in the tiny town of Forks. Milly was always friendly to everyone she met, including people walking down the street.

Every Saturday morning, Milly would wait at the window for the postman to come, and he did every day without fail, even if there was no post. Milly would listen as the older man told her stories about anything and everything, only stopping if he had more things to deliver.

The waiters and waitresses at the Forks Diner all knew Milly too. She could remember all of their names, and they all knew hers. They all had a place in their hearts for the little girl.

Today was Milly's 15th birthday, and some of her closest friends came to see her, hoping for a miracle. They brought cards and gifts for her, even though she couldn't open them or thank them. They wanted to show her how much they loved her and missed her. Everyone was there except her sister, who had not visited her since the accident. Charlie greeted the visitors with a sad smile. He appreciated their support and kindness. They gathered around Milly's bed, hoping she would hear them and wake up.

Her closest friends spent the day with her, with two of them staying the night.

A part of Charlie was expecting a message from one of the Cullens. He had become accustomed to the strange children, and only today had he noticed their absence. While Edward had left his eldest alone in the woods, Milly was close to his family. They were her closest friends at Forks High, so now that they were missing her birthday, which was usually a momentous occasion among the family, there was a sort of reality to the whole situation. They really did just get up and leave with no warning.

He had broken out of his train of thought at the blip.

Snapping his head up, he stares at the monitor. For two days, he had been listening to that repetitive beeping. It was the score in his mind, and he was clinging to the proof that Milly's heart was still beating.

That brief blip meant that her heart was beating faster than usual.

"Milly?" he whispers.

It blinked again.

"Milly, can you hear me, honey?"

The tiny girl shuffles on the stiff bed. A groan passes from her lips.

Charlie's eyes widen, and he puts a hand on her forehead. Looking down at her bandage, he sees red starting to seep through the dressing. His face falls incredulously, and he immediately feels on the wall for the silver emergency button.

"Hold on, Blue. Someone's comin'. You'll be alright..."

Milly's condition deteriorated quickly. She had suffered a severe haemorrhage that was treated with a five-hour surgery. She had fallen back into a coma after the procedure.
