Chapter 1

Within my mind, a storm does rage,
As I am trapped within a cage,
A world of darkness, void of light,
Where hope and joy have taken flight.

Trapped in a world that had long forgotten her, she was drowning in a sea of helplessness.

As Violet layed there, her mind raced with a flurry of thoughts that left her feeling suffocated. The dimly lit room seemed to constrict around her, amplifying her anxiety. She took a deep breath as she tried to push away the unease that threatened to consume her.

The curtains were a deep shade of blue that contrasted the stark paleness of the walls. The fabric was thick and velvety, effectively blocking out any light that might have found its way in. The window was old, with a layer of grime obscuring the view of the outside world.

Despite the suffocating atmosphere, Violet's eyes roamed the room restlessly, taking in every detail. A rickety wooden table stood in the corner, its surface covered in a thin layer of dust. Next to it, a single wooden chair was positioned haphazardly, as if discarded in a hurry.

The apartment however was small, cramped even, with only the bare essentials in place. It resembled the state of her mind; the state of her life.

The walls were bare, save for a single framed photograph that hung on the far end. It was an old black and white picture of a couple smiling happily, their faces forever frozen in time. Violet looked at it for a moment, wondering who they were and what their lives had been like. A mere four years had transformed her view of the world. The way she perceived life – blurred and barren.

Suddenly, the sound of a car passing by broke through the silence, pulling Violet out of her reverie. She turned her gaze back to the ceiling, watching as the shadows cast by the passing vehicle danced across the surface. The noise was a welcome distraction from her own thoughts, and she found herself listening intently, hoping to catch any other sounds that might break the silence.

The world outside seemed like a far-off place, removed from the cramped confines of her apartment. She wondered what it would be like to be out there, to feel the warmth of the sun on her skin and to be surrounded by the hustle and bustle of city life.

But for now, she was stuck here, alone with her thoughts and the oppressive silence that threatened to suffocate her. She closed her eyes as she took in another deep breath, determined to push through the storm raging in her mind.

Violet's heart raced as the memories flooded her mind, pulling her back to the past. She felt like a little girl again, trapped in a world where she was always alone. She tried to shake off the feeling, but it clung to her like wet cloth.

The room around her faded away, instantly replaced by the familiar sights and sounds of her childhood home. Pale blue walls, adorned by posters of her favourite bands and movie stars. The bed she lay on was small and uncomfortable, with only a thin blanket and a lumpy pillow.

Violet closed her eyes and inhaled a deep breath as she tried to focus on the present. But the memories wouldn't let go, pulling her back in time. She remembered how it felt to be alone, to have no one to talk to or confide in. Her parents were always working, and her brother was always off with his friends. She was left to her own resources, with only her imagination to keep her company.

But even that had its limits.

There were only so many stories she could create, so many imaginary friends she could conjure up. She longed for real connection, for someone to share her thoughts and dreams with.
