Chalena

(Chaol Westfall x Celaena Sardothien)

Before Queen of Shadows: SHIP!

Literally after Heir of Fire not gonna lie: Rip

SPOILERS FOR CROWN OF MIDNIGHT!

Let me tell you, this ship was my absolute OTP. Seriously, in the first pages, I saw how grumpy Chaol sounded and how Celaena rebelled against him, and I thought well, there's the main relationship, as I'd heard that the main love trope in this series was enemies to lovers.

Dorian kinda confused me because he was randomly staring at Celaena in the night, but I began to really ship Chaol and Celaena.

Firstly, the tension was undeniable. They had many scenes where they were bordering on romance in the first book.

I mean she begins to trust him and tell him things, he begins to enjoy her sense of humour, they do activities together, everything. He gets that ring for her, begins to see how her scars have formed her, how she is who she is.

He even kills Cain for her, which is a big call, because remember that Chaol never killed anyone before, and to have purposely slain him, and not just left him to be dealt with, to be captured, takes a lot of dedication or at the very least concern for the person.

In the second book, the connections grew, and I was just waiting until they got together. They grew closer, closer, and Dorian drifted farther, farther, which I felt really bad for, and which wasn't nice, but it was so cute-

And then his birthday comes. *insert evil laugh*

You should've seen how happy I was, how I was cheering. I'm usually a fangirl, but I was SO pleased they got together, and I thought they were so cute, and they were perfect, just how I wanted them and just how I'd imagined them and their interactions and how they treated each other whilst in love.

They had such happy, beautiful scenes together, but I was really concerned because there was a fair bit of the book left, and surely they couldn't have got together and the rest of the book was happy.

I was right. Sadly.

AAAAAAAAHHHH.

I was so sad, so annoyed, utterly torn apart by the event that forced them apart, and cleaved them away from each other. ICK!

Because, they had both liked each other so much, had sacrificed so much to be together and were having the best time. All the things they talk about, the things they imagine together are so sweet, and they both respect and treasure one another and the way they think about each other is special and precious.

The way that Chaol treated Celaena, made sure she was all right and loved her for being an assassin, for having all those scars, and accepting her and Endovier, was so so sweet, and just what she deserved after all this heartbreak and pain, especially after we hear about her tragedy with Sam, that tore her apart.

I thought it was such a shame that that would tear them apart when they were both so happy and strong. I understand now, that it was for the better, and now I'm happy that Chaol did force her to be sent to Wendlyn, and to 'start a new life' there.

But I hated it at the time, because it was such a sad way to end their relationship, and plus, Chaol giving up his position, a title he had loved and worked so hard for, for Celaena, just for her not to love him back was terrifically sad and also incredibly selfless of him, and mainly their relationship ended on such a bad note, I was extremely annoyed.

However, as I began to see how Celaena needed healing, how she needed the training and the acceptance of her title and regained identity, I began begrudgingly understanding Celaena, and accepting why Chaol and Celaena could not work out, could not have the tools necessary to form a perfect relationship.

Chaol loved Celaena Sardothien with his whole heart, his whole being. But despite that dedication, that love and adoration for her, that wasn't really her, her true identity deep within, although she tried to hide from it and deceive others about her true self.

She needed to love someone for herself, and not the image she created.

And that was why at the end of Heir of Fire and during Queen of Shadows, I stopped shipping Celaena and Chaol because I knew that nothing was to become of it, and they were both better with different people.
