My mind kept on replaying the events that occurred yesterday. I still couldn't believe that I could call Myeol my boyfriend even though he had shown a lack of interest ever since I stepped into the empty classroom and gave him the sweets that were stashed into my bag. The fact that he seen me as something more than an annoying girl at school made my pulse quicken.
The one thing that I hadn't enjoyed was the fact that Myeol continued to treat me the same when we entered the school doors. When I asked of the reasons that he didn't want me to go with him wherever he went and not announce to my friends of the blossoming relationship, he explained that it was something that could get me hurt. I hadn't understood his reasoning because there was no one in this school who was capable of hurting me but I respected it nonetheless.
I blew out a bubble with my gum as I tried to keep my eyes open for the teacher's slow explanation of the novel that we read that was supposedly "fun and entertaining". Other people in the class were either snacking on their lunches, listening to music through their earphones, sketching in their books or sleeping away the period. I paid massive respect to those who were seated by the front row, who sat intrigued and took notes of all of the things that the teacher said it was vital for a paper.
Everyone slowly woke up from their sleep when the teacher finally closed her book and let us have a few extra minutes to relax since the next chapter needed atleast an hour. Whispers, laughter and conversations broke out when the teacher sat down by her table and whipped out her phone to probably text the husband that she married a few weeks ago.
I lifted my head from my book when I heard multiple chairs scrapping against the floor and smiled when Christine and her group surrounded me with large smiles of their own. "Oh, hey guys," I greeted to everyone, closed the notebook and gave them my undivided attention.
"Don't hey us. We saw you with someone at the rollerskating rink," Christine began as she played with the locket that was around her neck. It was a pretty one that was a simple rose gold heart that contained the picture of her father who passed away a few years ago and connected to a really simple chain. She told me that the necklace brings her some peace and makes her feel very happy.
I blushed at the Christine's loudness which had garnered the attention of the groups around us. "It seems to us that you guys are pretty close. Being in each other's faces like that and laughing at each other's jokes," Anabelle, another friend of Christine's who was always never showing up at school due to her boyfriend in grade 12.
My blush deepened at the observation,"it was a casual outing guys, nothing much really. We were tired of going over the assignment that we needed something to do so I invited him. I'm sorry for ditching you guys anyways." I rummaged through my backpack for the lunchtin that contained all the chocolate cupcakes that I made yesterday as a form of apology for ditching without informing them. I'm sure that they were worried the whole night and were probably annoyed when they saw me with Myeol.
"You really didn't need to do this," Christine said as she took out the first cupcake and took a bite out of it. "We all ditch sometimes for our boyfriends so it's cool but on the topic, are you dating Myeol Mang?" Christine whispered and then everyone hunched towards the table to hear my response. I wanted to tell them that we were dating but I knew I couldn't because Myeol had specific instructions.
"I'm just going to the movies with him later on today." Everyone squealed at the announcement until the teacher reprimanded us that we should keep quiet or she would continue with work. Christine rolled her eyes at the threat because she knew that the teacher wouldn't ever start with work especially when there was 2 minutes left.
"You're gonna get laid," Christine said with a roll of her neck and a large smile. I shook my head continuously because it wasn't going to happen since it was a simple date and nothing more. "Yes, you are. That boy is handsome as hell and you're saying no? You should live life honey or else you're gonna regret it."
"It's nothing serious as well. Don't think much about it," Anabelle said as she reapplied her lipgloss due to her removing it when she was eating the cupcake that I made. "Plus girl your cupcakes are amazing. You should ditch us even more so that we can eat your baked goods."
We all laughed but I stopped when I felt a tap onto my arm. I turned away from two group to Myeol who wore his usual hoodie, and jeans with plain headphones on his ears, blasting rap music loudly without a care in the world. "We're going." I looked down at the time and saw that we still had an hour of school left.
"We still have Afrikaans left," I pointed out.
"Nobody cares about Afrikaans so let's go. I'm sure your friends will give you all the work that you need," I nodded my head, packed my stationary that decorated my table and left the class with my backpack over my shoulder.
"You know you that being kind won't kill you?" I said as we left the classroom that had children screaming out their business to the whole world. I sighed when he hadn't given me a response but his mouth moved into a small smile.
