She stood there in front of the tomb where he laid for the last time. Her mouth was sealed, her pallid face frozen in a blank expression as the guests and visitors left one by one.
Her stoic mask spoke a deeper sorrow than tear-streaked cheeks and reddened eyes, her silence was more deafening than a thousand cries.
Her smile had never left her. Her cheerful spirit never failed to lighten up even the grumpiest ones.
She always laughed.
She always joked around. But not that day.
As the last visitor left the room, her mask broke. It started with a single tear running down her cheek, quickly turning into uncontrollable sobs that shook her entire body.
Her trembling lips uttered the same word over and over again, begging him to return to her and stay. Her hands gripped the side of the tomb until her knuckles are white, and she cried; until her eyes are red and sore and with heaving chest and staggered breathing and legs that are threatening to give up under her she kneeled, laying her head on the cold stone surface, on where his chest would be inside the tomb, silently begging to hear his heartbeat once again.
For nearly fifty years they lived together.
Never have she thought she will outlive him, and she never wanted to; despite their age difference.
She was his closest friend, his muse, even occasionally a place to ask for advices when running the kingdom gets too hard to be done alone.
They have been so close since she joined the Company on the quest to reclaim Erebor, and as her brother set off to return to the Shire to live a peaceful and quiet life in Bag End with his betrothed, the rightful King Under The Mountain; she decided to stay in Erebor, and for the next few weeks she stayed in his room with his brother trying to calm him when he was a nervous wreck because now the crown goes to his hands in such a short time, and he was as scared as any young dwarf will be when given such a big responsibility.
And she was there for him when his mother Dís passed away, helping him go through grieving and she was there, 24/7 as a shoulder to cry on. When the day goes dark and he took off his crown and let go of his position as King, away from the public eye, when he returned to his room and felt so small and helpless, she's always there to reassure him that everything will be fine, she'll smile and bake him his favorite sweets and occasionally brings him flowers (even though she hates gardening).
She did everything it takes to make him smile again.
He helped her overcome her fears and brought courage to her heart throughout the journey, and she did the same to him.
And each time he smiled at her, at the end of every hug and every tears and laughter they shared he always said the same thing to her,
"Thank you, you have been a very good friend."A good friend.
Never did she tell him that he was always the last thing she thought of before she goes to bed, that she longed for more than friendly hugs and it took everything in her not to look up and stare at his face and his lips at every embrace because she'll wonder what it feels like to kiss them, and it ached more and more every day because those words were always there, at the tip of her tongue, but never once did she dare to say them. She longed for him, to be able to call him hers, to wake up every morning to those beautiful blue eyes and messy golden braids next to her; she wanted him to braid her nearly impossible hair with courting beads like what his brother did to Tauriel, and she wanted to do the same to him.
But she was nothing more than a good friend.
Still she stayed, at every turmoil. She was there at every sleepless night. She shared every laughter and every tears and it broke her heart, but it will kill her more if she wasn't there.
She can't live without him.And those were the reasons why she saved his life back then, in Ravenhill. One thing that she never told him.
And she wishes she's able to do it again now.
Now that his last words were to tell her that he loved her, that she can still feel his last breath on her lips and his trembling hand holding hers.
She grieved over him for a month and twenty days.
And on the twenty first day, her heart gave up on her.
