I sprinted as fast as I could through the dark forest, tripping over trees and bushes that obscured my vision. Despite being badly bruised and battered, I refused to give up. Every few seconds, I glanced back to check if my pursuers were still on my tail. Although I saw no sign of them, my anxiety continued to gnaw at me, fueling my frantic escape.
They'll kill you and send you back to your father piece by piece.
My mind raced with questions. Who were these people? Why did they want to kill me? What did they want from my father? They must be mistaken, as my father had no enemies. Or did he? Could one of his patients be involved?
My mind felt like it was about to explode. I couldn't believe I was running through a dark forest, trying to escape from whoever was chasing me. All kinds of thoughts kept racing through my head, making it hard to focus. How long had I been running for? Hopefully the road isn't far...
The ground gave way beneath my feet and before I knew it, I was tumbling to the ground. Twigs and pine cones scraped against my knees as I rolled.
"Aaaaaah!" I screamed in pain. When I finally came to a stop, I stayed in place for a few seconds to catch my breath, still panting. After a few moments, I raised my head, attempting to stand up, but quickly shielded my eyes from the sudden light of a passing car. I had made it to the road! Without a second thought, I stood up quickly, forgetting about my battered legs and arms, and ran out onto the road.
It was dark but warm, a nice July evening, but my situation made it anything but enjoyable. I was kidnapped by people who wanted something from my father, and it definitely wasn't money if they were ready to kill me.
With forest on both sides of the road, I had no clue where I was or where those creeps had taken me. I scanned left, then right, desperate for any kind of clue. A city, a town, anything. I took a chance and turned left, my steps faltering and unsure. The silence around me was deafening.
As I continued walking, my anxiety grew with every passing minute. Although it was warm outside, I couldn't stop shivering. Suddenly, I heard a rustling sound coming from behind me, causing me to freeze in my tracks.
Shit! It must be them!
I quickly jumped to the side of the road, scanning my surroundings for a bush to hide behind. But it was too late. Suddenly, a figure emerged onto the road. Squinting in an attempt to see better, I realized it was a man - the same man who had freed me and told me to run.
Damn, was this some kind of prank and now he's coming after me?
"What are you still doing here?" he asked in a hushed tone as he approached me. "You were supposed to disappear by now!"
"To disappear how?" I asked, feeling confused.
"I told you to stop a car, any car as soon as you reach the road," he hissed through gritted teeth.
"I've been here for a while now, and not a single car has passed," I hissed back. "Believe me, I wouldn't stick around for a second longer."
He looked at me incredulously.
"It's 3:30 in the morning, so it's not surprising that there are no cars passing by," I explained.
"Then we need to leave, we can't stay here..."
"We? You mean the two of us?" I asked in disbelief.
"What part of 'we need to leave' don't you understand?" he replied irritably.
„You kidnapped me and now you want me to walk with you down some godforsaken road at 3:30 in the morning, in a direction I don't even know where it leads to?" My voice was rising uncontrollably, fueled by fear and confusion. The adrenaline was pounding through me.
"Do you have a better plan?" he asked sarcastically.
