Celestina Warbeck was playing over the radio in the kitchen as Molly Weasleys cooked. As usual, her children and grandchildren weren’t helping her out but the Weasleys household had invited the Malfoys over for Christmas Dinner so Draco and Scorpius were by her side. (Albus said that he was helping but he was mostly getting in the way, although Scorpius didn’t mind.) Scorpius was ecstatic at the thought of helping – he had been taught bits and pieces of cooking and baking by their house-elf – whereas Draco was more apprehensive having been raised in a pureblood family and having had everything done for him by others or by magic most of his life. However, he was willing to try, largely because Scorpius seemed so invested.
Well, he had seemed invested.
“Albus!” Scorpius giggled, batting Albus away when the latter blew a kiss with a handful of flour and got it all over Scorpius’ face. Albus laughed, running out of reach as Scorpius chased him around the kitchen table.
“Alright, who gave the kids sugar?” Ginny joked, hands on hips, as she came in to check on how they were doing. The boys skidded to a halt and Draco held up his hands.
“Not me. They were giddy to start with.”
“It’s Christmas! Why wouldn’t we be?” Albus defended, sending a wink to Scorpius. It was half of the truth. They were giddy because it was their first Christmas together with the Weasleys but also because it was their first Christmas together as a couple. Albus had said that he was ready to come out to his family so they were slightly energised from nerves.. The boys hadn’t really gone over how to do it.
Regardless, the Malfoys had been adopted by the Weasley family as of late. Even now, Draco was wearing a pale grey Weasley jumper with a dark green ‘D’ and Scorpius wore a pale one with a silver ‘S’. Scorpius’ jumper was adorably oversized and he’d bunched his sleeves up at his elbows so that he didn’t get it sweater paws dirty. He was bright eyed and bouncy, which had been rare after the incident with Delphi and rare when the bullying was really bad. He was enjoying himself properly and he adored Albus’ family and was over the moon that they liked him. He fit in well and got on with everyone. After all, he was very likeable and the family was very welcoming.
“Well,” Molly said as she finished dicing up some vegetables, “we were all going to go to Diagon Alley to stock up on school supplies but, Scorpius, your father tells me you have everything and that you might need a bit of a break.”
Scorpius nodded. He tried his best but be could only be around people for so long. Except Albus. Albus was different.
“I’ll stay and keep him company,” Albus offered with a grin and a pleading look at his mother. Ginny glanced at Molly, who shrugged.
“If Scorpius doesn’t mind...”
“I don’t!” Scorpius piped up, grabbing Albus’ arm and tugging him closer. Ginny stuffed her hands in her pockets.
“Okay then. Try not to burn the house down whilst we’re gone,” she teased, heading to the door. Draco washed his hands and followed.
“And don’t touch my food!” Molly called over her shoulder as she left to round everyone up.
When Albus and Scorpius were the only ones left in the house, they immediately fell onto the sofa to cuddle. Albus was held in Scorpius’ arms with his head on the other’s chest and his arms around a thin waist. They talked quietly for a while about nothing that mattered and yet it was perfect. When they fell into silence, it was peaceful. All that could be head was the radio. They were so comfortable with each other that silence could never be awkward.
After a while, a slow song came on the radio. Albus smiled, standing up and bowing as he offered a hand to his boyfriend. Scorpius raised an eyebrow but took it and kissed it as he stood.
“Very polite, my good sir,” Albus commented with a chuckle.
“Of course,” Scorpius replied, taking hold of Albus’ hips. Albus looped his arms around Scorpius’ neck, drawing him in for a brief kiss. They swayed a glided slowly around the kitchen, absorbed in each other’s company. At one point, Scorpius dipped Albus and they burst out laughing.
“Your family will be back soon,” Scorpius reminded Albus as another song started to play. Albus met his eyes and shrugged, tightening his hold.
“So? I was thinking that something like this would be a nice way to let them know. We could just act like us and let them figure it out. It wouldn’t really be that different from what we were like before.”
“Yeah.” Scorpius smiled softly. “That would be nice.”
He kept smiling as they kissed. His hands moved around Albus’ back and Albus’ hand cupped his face. Their tongues danced as they did and they pulled back with the same lovesick expressions.
So they kept dancing, only stopping when the door opened and they were called to help with the cargo. James gave them a funny look as he walked past, Lily grinned, Hugo gave them a thumbs up and Rose rolled her eyes fondly. That was four people already.
Albus grasped Scorpius’ hand under the table as they ate, giving it a reassuring squeeze. He didn’t let go when the family went to open their remaining presents. Lily and Hugo ran so fast they nearly fell over. Most of the presents had been opened that morning but the parents had insisted that some be left for the evening. As of such, Scorpius and Albus hadn’t exchanged gifts yet. They stood in the doorway of the kitchen whilst the others tore open their presents in the other room with their gifts behind their backs. Albus’ forest green eyes were fixed on Scorpius’ storm-cloud ones, both with fond expressions and neither seeing anything else except each other. Albus was first to break the spell, his eyes flicking to above them.
“Look, Scorp,” he remarked with a hint of amusement and hope in his voice. “Mistletoe.”
Scorpius grinned and closed the gap. It wasn’t long before their Christmas kiss was interrupted by Teddy coughing pointedly.
“Hi. I left my wand in here.”
Scorpius blushed but Albus wasn’t fazed. They both moved back, allowing Teddy to pass and grab his wand. He paused before going back to the living room, giving the pair a once over.
“Um, good for you, by the way. Don’t mind me. Get back to snogging.”
He left and, not thirty seconds later, Albus and Scorpius couldn’t contain their laughter anymore. Scorpius tucked Albus’ present under his arm, surged forward and pulled Albus into another kiss.
All in all, it was a good first Christmas.
