ANNABELLE

I PUT MY head down as I entered the gas station. I had a baseball cap on my head with my hood up, hoping no one could see my face, but who was I kidding. I went to the candy aisle and grabbed a Payday candy bar. I went to drink and grabbed a Sprite. I noticed someone glancing at me and I put my head down as I went to the cash register.

"Good morning." The old old male cashier said with a cheerful tone. He wore square glasses and had white hair.

"Morning." I spoke quietly as I placed my items on the counter, keeping my head down. As the man was scanning my things I felt a tap on my shoulder.

"Excuse me. Are you Annabelle Banovia?" A woman asked as I turned slightly to her.

"Uh," I cleared my throat as I brushed a piece of hair behind my ear. "Yes," I said as I picked up my head.

"Oh, you are the girl that can run really fast, and-and pick up stuff with your mind. You are a hero. Thank you for helping us." The man said as he bowed his head lightly at me.

"Uh." I stammered not really knowing what to say.

"Oh, trust me. She is no hero. Along with her friend Wanda Maximoff. Didn't you hear about what happened in Nigeria? It's her fault, she's dangerous. And so is she." The lady said harshly as she pointed at me. "You don't belong in this country. Go back to wherever it is you came from and leave innocent people alone."

The lady turned on her heels and left the gas station. I stood frozen in my place.

"Do not listen to her. She doesn't know what she is talking about. We are very grateful for your sacrifice Ms. Banovia." The man said, making me turn to him. I gave him a small smile as I handed the money.

"Thanks." I muttered as I grabbed my things before quickly walking out of the gas station.

My breath started to quicken as I walked down the crowded streets of New York. Tears blurring my vision while I thought of the woman's words. My chest ached and I quickly walked to a hidden ally. I glanced around and rubbed my chest, trying to calm my racing heart.

I ran the rest of the way to Tony and I's cabin in the woods. I lived here most days and worked in the workshop/training area in the basement. Tony would bounce back and forth from here and the Avengers main headquarters. Sometimes he would let me go with him so I could try and see Wanda, though she never wanted to see me.

I walked in and placed my things down on the counter as I took deep breaths.

I heard barking as paws hit the floor. Kenny, my golden retriever puppy, ran up to me and jumped on my legs.

"Hey." I sniffle as I bend down to pick him up. He licks my face, causing me to smile. When he stopped licking my face he looked at me and tilted his head. "I'm fine. This lady just came up to me and she didn't say very nice things to me." I said sadly.

Tony got Kenny for me about a month ago because I still wasn't doing very well. Kenny's basically my emotional support animal, as Tony likes to call him.

I haven't visited Wanda since what happened in Nigeria. I heard about it on the news. Then again, I've barely seen Wanda since everything happened in Sokovia. It's been really difficult since she blames me for what happened to Pietro. I know it's my fault. I just wish she would learn to forgive me so I could have some closure. But that's selfish of me to think. Right?

I felt a vibration in my back pocket and I pulled out my phone, revealing a text from Tony.

TONY

Meet me outside in ten minutes. Pack some clothes and keep Kenny at home

Me:

👍

I put Kenny down and went to my room, Kenny following me.

Kenny sat on my bed and watched me as I packed my bag. I quickly put Kenny in his kennel and put a bunch of food and water in his bowls.

"Love you Kenny." I told him as I pet his head through the kennel before leaving.

I walked outside and saw Happy parked on the gravel.

"Hi Happy!" I chirped as I bounced down the wooden steps.

"Hello, Belly." Happy smiled tiredly.

I opened the back door to Tony's car and slid in next to him, placing my backpack on the floor.

"Hey, Belly." Tony greeted as he sighed, looking down at his phone.

"What's going on?" I ask him.

"I'll tell you on the way." Tony replied as Happy pulled out of the driveway.
