\\ CHAPTER ONE // (RHYDIAN'S POV)
Rhydian Morris felt his heart beating faster in his chest as he stood up in the very front of the classroom, feeling the curious stares on him. They were faces he didn't recognize, in a completely new school, in a new town.
Being new was not something unfamiliar to him. He'd bounced around from foster home to foster home, school to school so much he'd lost track of how many he'd been in. They were all the same. None of them giving him any sense of belonging or home.
And Rhydian was sure that this school wouldn't be any different from all the others. No matter how many schools and foster homes they shuffled him through, he would always be the outcast, the loner, the one who kept everyone at a distance because he was afraid of someone finding out his secret.
He already had it set in his mind that he would just keep under the radar. He'd go unnoticed until he moved to another school or finished school all together.
Which was why he hated having to stand up in front of the class and be introduced. He much rather would have slipped quietly in and let people wonder.
"Class, this is Rhydian Morris," Mr. Jefferies introduced him, "Who I'm guessing is from...Wales!"
Rhydian frowned right away, "No."
The class started chuckling, and Rhydian couldn't figure out if they were laughing at him or because Mr. Jefferies had gotten it wrong. Either way, he shifted on his feet uncomfortably.
"No?" Jeffries replied, then addressed the class, "Okay, he's not from Wales, sue me..."
A lot of the students in the class started making sheep sounds, poking fun at him, and just when Rhydian thought that that would be the worst of it...
"You smell like my parents." A girl spoke up suddenly.
Laughter immediately ensued and Rhydian tried to hide his embarrassment. He'd been there all of five minutes and the mocking had already begun. Not exactly under the radar like he'd hoped. Once the initial embarrassment left him, he looked up at the girl who'd just made fun of him, with his jaw locked in anger.
"Maddy, sit down." Jefferies told her, then to him, "Rhydian, you too."
Rhydian lowered his head as he started walking towards the back of the room, but then his eyes caught those of a girl sitting in the middle row as he walked by. She had long, brown-red hair, and hazel colored eyes. She was looking at him with soft eyes, with a hint of intrigue...as if there was something about him that she was trying to figure out.
He sat down in one of the empty desks in the back of the classroom, shrinking down into his seat. As Mr. Jefferies began to teach, Rhydian glanced forward, towards the girl who he'd caught eyes with.
There was something about her that he found himself curious about as well. And he didn't know what it was. There was just...something...
His eyes fell back to his desk, reminding himself it didn't matter anyways. He was going to stick to his plan. Keep his head down and go unnoticed. He was used to being alone. In fact, he was quiet good at it. As long as he kept to himself, everything would be fine.
Little did he know in that moment that things were going to go way far from what he had planned.
