I awaken to a bright whiteness. Even through my closed eyelids, light pours into vision. It smells of clean; of disinfectant and soap. I feel rough sheets under me and a saggy pillow by my head. My head lies on the mattress, the material from the pillow tickles my nose giving me the urge to sneeze. There is gentle breathing by my side. A chair squeaks from right by the bed.
"Lilly?" A gentle voice asks, "Lilly? Are you awake?"
"Mmff" I mumble, turing my head to the source of the sound. Opening my eyes, a beam of light washes over me. Beside me is Skye.I look around at my surroundings, confused. From what my groggy brain can register, I'm in the nurse's office. I look back at Skye, and give him a look that says, "what is happening?"
He reads my expression and his eyes light up with concern.
"Lilly..." He says slowly and gently, reaching out for my hand, "do you remember what happened?"I looked at him for a bit, noticing that with each passing moment, his palm got more and more sweaty. His eyes shift in quick, sharp movements; looking me over with worry.
Suddenly, it all comes back.
"I was talking to Alex...." I say hoarsely and weakly, "then Samantha..."
Skye puts his finger to my mouth.
"Shhhh..." He whispers, "don't tire yourself. I get it - she attacked."
I nod feebly in response. As I look over at Skye again, I notice he has a piece of paper in his hand. He follows my gaze and opens up his hand. Inside is a school timetable with the name "Skye Adams, class 9A" over the top. I sit up and look at the paper and then up at Skye.
"What is this?" I ask, confused, "why do you have a school timetable?"
He combs his finger through his long hair, sheepishly.
"Well..." He mumbles, "guess who's your new classmate."
I turn to face him and look straight into his eyes.
"Why?" I whisper weakly, "when did you do this?"
"Saturday, before you arrived to find me" he explains, "that's why I was by the school. I'd just registered to your school."
"Why did you do that?" I ask, "I know you hate being surrounded by humans."
"With Samantha back, I thought it would be best if I was near to you at all times," he replies, "just in case and it's just as well I did."I nodded weakly in agreement. I didn't need to ask how he'd managed to convince the registration office to move him to the front of the waiting list. Mind-control clearly is what accomplished that. I sat silently for a while, letting this news sink in. Skye was going to be in my school, in my class. I wasn't sure how I felt about this. But he is right- I really need him right now.

After convincing the nurse that i was perfectly capable of going back to class with no trouble, Skye and I walk out of the office and head for my- I mean, our- next class, Geography. We're at least thirty minutes late but the teacher probably already received the message of my situation.
On opening the door of the class, I receive many stares. All my classmates have turned their head to stare at me and the strange, new boy by my side. Mrs. Green turns to me and smiles.
"Hello Lilly, I wasn't expecting you to come back to class today. Are you quite well?" She asks sweetly.
"Yes Miss," I reply, plastering on my most convincing smile, "I feel much better now, thank you."
She nods in approval before turning to Skye.
"And this must be the new student..." She starts, looking to Skye for confirmation.
"Skye Adams, Miss." he says confidently.
She nods again and looks over the classroom, where many female eyes stare with wonder at Skye. I'd forgotten what a reaction fully-matured vampires had on humans. I guess I've just gotten used to him."Well Lilly, why don't you head over to your seat," she says gently before facing Skye, "and, Skye, you just wait a moment and then find an empty seat anywhere in the room"
We both nod and I head towards my empty table at the back of the classroom, away from everyone. I plonk down into my seat and start pulling my stuff out of my bag that I'd found by the bed in the nurse's office. I look up and find Skye walking towards my table. On the way, Clarissa (the class flirt) stops him.
"There's a free seat by me," she says, flipping her hair over her shoulders and fluttering her eyelashes, "why don't you sit here?"Skye smiles politely at her.
"Thank you," he responds, "but I'm sitting next to Lilly."
Clarissa looks, open-mouthed and gob smacked as Skye seats himself by me and starts to unpack his backpack. This is going to get a whole lot more complicated, isn't it?
