Its been a month. A month since it happened, a month in my new life, a month of laying low, a month of careful control over my new instincts. None of that month has prepared me for this.
He sits a mere three tables away in the crowded cafeteria. His brown hair covers his eyebrows. His eyes are big and brown. But none of that phases me. I've seen cuter guys and not been at all phased by their appearance. It's not his looks that draw me to him. It's his smell. I can smell him from here. The smell of his blood calls to me, making me want to lead him away from the crowd, making me want to bite into his tan skin, to taste his blood that smells so sweet and tempting from across all those tables. But I can't do it. I must hold on. But his smell fills me....... I must get a breath of air, away from here. I turn to my friend whose chatting away as if the world depended on it.
"Ash?"
"Yeah?" She says, happy I have finally spoken. She still wonders what happened to my bubbly self. Why I have become this strange silent person. If only she knew. But she can't know.
"I need to go to the bathroom. I'll be back soon," I lie, hopelessly. Ash knows I'm lying but she doesn't pry. This is why I like her - she minds her own business when you make it clear you don't want to talk.
"Sure," she nods slowly.
I walk slowly but putting as much distance between me and the new guy as possible. Finally, when I can no longer smell him, I stop to think. Why is it that this new boy gave me such a reaction? I've never smelt blood so powerfully before. Even when I'm standing next to a person, I don't smell their blood so strongly. All I know is there is something strange going on but I have no time to keep thinking because the bell is ringing loudly, snapping me out of my thoughts. Walking a bit faster than before, but without drawing attention to myself, I grab my bag and stalk after Ash to French.

Once I'm sat down comfortably with my stuff organised for class, I turn to the boy on my left.
"Hi, Lilly," he says when he notices I've finished organising my things.
"Hey, Alex," I respond, smiling (Something I rarely do now)
"Did you finish copying from my 'Grammar in action'?"
"Not yet. I'll take it again today if you don't mind, " he says, passing the book to me. As my hands reach out to get it, I drop a pencil that was near the edge of the table. I start to lean back on my chair to see where it went, but Alex stops me and reaches for it himself . As he leans towards the pencil, his short blond hair strokes my arm and I turn to meet his blue-green eyes.
"Here's your pencil," he says passing it to me, never dropping his gaze. I take the pencil and, with much effort, look away from his hypnotising eyes. I have no time to thank him, though, because the teacher calls me to the front in order to present my PowerPoint presentation.
However, as I walk to the front of the class, I feel his eyes follow me and with my super-enhanced hearing, I hear a silent word escape his lips.
"Wow....."

At home, I lay back on my bed and replay the day's events. Firstly, there is a new boy in the other year group whose blood draws me in like never before.
Secondly, Alex was acting strange again today. It's not the first time he suddenly started acting different - it's been happening for weeks now. We were never really good friends before, in reality, I never really liked him. But this term, I just decided to be extra nice to him. I was really happy with the results; under all that arrogance, there was a sweet, humorous guy who never made fun of me again and stood up for me on many occasions.
