Alex's POV
I don't know what I'm doing. I look at Luca. He may be 'ok' looking and new but that gives him no right to bother Lilly. She probably thinks nobody noticed how tense she got when Luca spoke to her, but I did. I always notice when she's tense. I always notice when she's scared or sad.
"Shut up, you idiot! " A part of me shouts, "You sound stupid"
I shut that part of me off and look at Luca. He seems suprised. Obviously. How dare he scare Lilly like that? Whatever he said, freaked her out.
"Or maybe his presence is what freaked her out" the part insists, "Face the facts; why would she like you? You only just started being friends! She doesn't like your type! She likes him!"
Shut up! That can't be! Why would she like him?! He's.......just her type. I drop my arm and instead look Luca in the eyes.
"What did you say to her?" I ask struggling to control my tone.
"I only say hi. I say my name is Luca and she walk away" says Luca, ignorant to the fact that my eyes are clouding. No! Stop! Don't look weak!
"See?! She was tense because she likes him! Deal with it! She was never was, and will never be, yours"
I take a breath and look away from Luca.
"Sorry" I apologise but Luca is not looking at me. He is looking at something behind me.
"Wow!" He gasps.
I turn and look at what he's looking at. A bat. A silky brown.....fruit bat. It's sitting on the table behind me, looking at me. At me! It's eyes wide and.......wait. Those eyes look strangely familiar. I really am insane! The bat crawls towards the edge of the table, eyes locked with mine. It flys up and comes towards me. I do nothing but look into it's beautiful brown eyes. I don't even flinch as it lands on my shoulder like some kind of mutated parrot. All I do is look into it's eyes. The bat leans towards my face and I find myself drawn to it. I turn my head further until it's face is a centimetre away from mine. Still the bat leans towards me. It's muzzle is about to connect with my lips when, suddenly, something grabs it.
"Woah, fella!" The gloved janitor says, holding the bat away from himself. "You ok? Did he bite you?" The janitor says, this time, looking at me.
"It's a she and no, it didn't bite me. I'm fine" I tell him, my eyes on the bat I somehow know is female. The bat looks back at me before wriggling out of the janitor's grasp and shooting to the sky. It lands on the large mango tree next to another bat. It looks back at me and my heart stops. Something about that bat is so beautiful, so amazing, so..........incredible.
The other bat, a silky black one, looks at me curiously. Then it turns to the brown bat before flying off. The brown bat looks at me for a while more, the world seems to disappear. All I can see are those beautiful, brown eyes. The bat then........winks at me? I shake my head, rub my eyes and look back at the bat but she's.......gone. Someone's shaking my shoulder and I turn. It's Alister.
"Hey, dude!" He says, punching my arm, "You ok? That was so creepy!"
"Yeah...creepy" I mumble.
"Can't believe Lilly missed that!" Alister continues, his eyebrows raised teasingly.
"Fuck off!" I swear, shoving him slightly. As he shoves me back, I see Lilly walking towards me. Time slows down as she reaches me. I look into her eyes, admiringly. Beside me, Alister clears his throat.
"I guess I'll just leave." He says, walking to meet Edmund at the guy table. They turn to wink at me before laughing.
I don't care. I just wait for Lilly to reach me and smile at her. A genuine smile. Just for her. She smiles back and speeds up.
"Hey! Are you all right? I heard about the bat. Oh god! I wish I was here!" She says once she reaches me.
"It was pretty cool" I say, hypnotised by her presence. She frowns. A look of concern passes her face.
"Hey...." she says quietly, her hand reaching out to touch my arm. I hear the boys not-so-casually snicker behind me.
"Are you ok, Alex? " she continues, truly worried. "Did the bat hurt you?"
"No. I'm just...." I say, rubbing my arm nervously, "...kind of shocked. That's all"
She smiles and nods her head, turning to leave. I impulsively grap her arm, wanting to tell her how I feel.
"Lilly....." I start, but I chicken out when I meet her concerned eyes, "...thanks for asking if I was all right."
She smiles and pulls my hand off, holding it in hers.
"Of course. What are friends for?"
I try to hold my smile while she says it, but a part of me shatters.
"Told you so!" The part of me shouts. "You're just a friend to her"
She looks down at my hand and I see that I've been holding on to hers tightly. I release her hand and put mine in my pockets. She smiles shyly and walks off. As she walks away, I feel a part of me leave with her. If only she knew.....but she doesn't. All because I'm too chicken to tell her.
I look to the ground and a single tear falls down my cheek. I wipe it off quickly and walk towards the guy table, ignoring the tingling sensation in my hand.
Lilly's POV
I watch him walk to his table, feeling like a piece of my heart is missing. I shake my head and will myself to forget about him. But how can I after that? My hand still feels weird from when he held it. I push my feelings away. The last thing I need is my emotions messing with my head.
But as the bell rings, I can't help but think I actually........like him, can't help but think I should have told him. Then. While my hands were in his. What is going on in there, heart? What are you planning for me?
