After our trip to Thailand, the days that followed were incredibly mundane. Soon the summer break would come to an end, having only three days left, I asked Dechen, “Do you want to do some back to school shopping?” “Its fine I am already ready, I bought some equipments in Pattaya.” said Dechen as she ironed her uniform. Dechen was to attend Changangkha Middle Secondary School and she was actually a good student. Unlike me, she was ambitious and social and was determined to become a business woman.
As I went back to the store I saw Yuphel playing with a baby kitten. “I don’t think she has a mommy, I have been waiting here for a while now and still no signs,” said Yuphel as she brushed the kitten’s back. “If its mother does not show up by the end of our shift, we can keep it.” I said as I stocked up the snacks in the shelves. I spent the day cleaning the shop and interacting with customers while Yuphel stayed outside with the kitten. As she played with the kitten, she continued to smile. Her smile was powerful enough to make me smile as well. Meeting her might have been the best thing that ever happened to me.
Later we took the kitten home as its mother had not come. As soon as we came home, Dechen’s face changed. She was smiling. I have known her all my life and I had never seen her smile. “Aww, what’s that cute little creature there?” said Dechen in a cute voice. I and Yuphel were stunned and froze as we had seen the impossible. The girl with no signs of humanity was taking care of a kitten.
I decided to give the kitten a bath but that proved to be difficult. Each time I dipped its legs in the water it would cry. I had no idea how to get it to take a bath. Suddenly I felt a humongous force in my head. It was incredibly painful. It felt just like I had been hit by a gorilla. As I turned my head back, I saw Dechen and Yuphel glaring at me. “You imbecile, you don’t even know how to bathe a kitten. Why are you being so rough?” screamed Dechen as she held the kitten in her arms. “You should gently lower him into warm water, not plunge into a cold bath,” lectured Yuphel.  Dechen cleaned the kitten while Yuphel calmed it down. I was kicked out and I washed the dishes. The kitten came out of the bathroom clean and fluffy. It looked bigger as its fur became fluffy. I fed the kitten a warm bowl of milk and we all stared at the kitten drink the milk. “I think we should give the kitten a name” I said. “Let us name him Max” “Really? That is so creative” said Dechen sarcastically. “Let’s call him Van Gogh”. “That sounds so pretentious, what does that even mean?” I said with a confused stare. “That is the name of a famous Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh. He is one of the most influential painter in the world. You would know that if you had the culture to read books.” said Yuphel while petting the kitten. Dechen and I continued to argue before Yuphel told me “Lets name him Nima- he brings joy and bright smiles to the room like sunshine.” That was genius, I repeated it to Dechen and she was impressed. “That’s actually smart, didn’t expect that from an idiot like you” said Dechen in a condescending tone. So we decided to name the kitten as Nima. As we were excited about the kitten, we heard a knock on the door. “Excuse me, I was told some people brought my kitten here? Oh there you are Oggy” said the woman. “Oggy?” the three of said out loud. The woman showed us some pictures of her and Oggy proving that she was the rightful owner. She thanked us and took the kitten back. We all said our goodbyes to the kitten while holding back tears.
Finally it was time for Dechen to go to school. Yuphel and I walked with Dechen to school and wished her good luck. “Why are you coming to school with me? It’s so embarrassing” said Dechen while covering her face. “As your older brother I feel satisfaction in seeing your pain” I said as I performed my best evil laugh. As Dechen ran to the school I felt a bit proud. Just as I turned my back to go back to the shop, I saw Yuphel staring at the students as they walked through the school gate. She stared at them with a look of longing. “You know I am worried about Dechen. I hope someone can go to school with her and look after her,” I said as I stretched my arms. “Oh I can do it, I’ll look after her in school” said Yuphel trying to contain her excitement.
I spent the day in the shop by sleeping and watching some anime. While I spent the day lazing around, Dechen was busy making friends in school. Yuphel followed behind Dechen and watched with beaming curiosity. Dechen was fitting in well and Yuphel explored the school. The teachers did not teach that day so the students spent the time talking with each other. During lunch break Dechen went for a walk in the football ground. She walked around without looking as she was reading a book she picked from the library. Yuphel followed her around as usual. Yuphel saw that Dechen was walking towards a hole. Yuphel tried pushing her but it didn’t work. Yuphel started to panic and went to Dechen’s ears and said “Watch out!! There is a hole”. Dechen suddenly stopped in her tracks and looked around “Is anyone there?’’ said Dechen as she looked around. Yuphel moved closer to Dechen’s ear and said, ‘’you can hear me?’’ “Who are you? And where are you?” said Dechen as she looked around in confusion. “Oh I have been waiting to talk with you for so long. Hi I am Yuphel and I am your brother’s roommate. We have a lot to talk about.” She explained the situation to Dechen. “So you are a spirit who my brother is helping.  His change in behaviour makes sense now. It looks like we are going be friends from now on” said Dechen “I can’t believe you want be friends with me, I am so happy” said Yuphel while wiping tears from her eyes. The two girls continued to chat till the bell rang. As the bell rang, the class teacher brought in a new student. “Hi my name is Chimmi Dorji, I look forward to studying with you.” said the boy. “Ok everyone Chimmi is a visually impaired student.  I want everyone to make him feel welcome. Dechen can you be Chimmi’s seat partner? As you are the only one without a partner” said the teacher. “Ok I don’t mind it’’ said Dechen. As Chimmi sat down he said “Why is there another girl above you?”
