The smell was horrid.
It stuck to him like a bad omen and your nostrils burned from the shear foulness. You would've connected it to a sense of nostalgia had it not been for your mind being too hazy to remember anything in the first place. It was quite possible some of your repressed memories would resurface the longer you were near him. He smelt like death, copper, and ash.
Your head was pounding.
"By the way, I wanted to ask..."
Your focus was tugged back to reality. In the moments following your realization, you and Samuel had been moved to a different room and strapped to chairs. The chairs had been positioned to face each other so you were staring at Samuel's unconscious face. There was a figure perched on a table behind him, casually twirling a knife.
This did not look good.
"How did you get involved with Mr. Afton in the first place?," Vanny mused, professionally balancing the knife on her finger tip.
It was a very long story and one you didn't want to talk about, so you stayed quiet.
"You know-," she leapt of the table and trotted towards you, "-it would be so easy for me to just plunge this into your neck, but I won't do that because then the fun will be over."
The fear and dread were back and more powerful than ever. It flooded your veins like a river bursting through a dam, crashing into the innocent city below. Even if you tried your hardest to make it seem like you weren't afraid of her, you very much were and you knew she could do so much more than what you already knew.
"So let me suggest this...," she moved to stand behind you and put her hands on your shoulders, effectively grounding you, "I ask a question and you answer."
You kept your head forward and your eyes trained on Samuel, silently praying he wouldn't wake up.
"It's a simple game really," she continued, taking her hands off your shoulders and walking back over to Samuel, "And if you don't answer... well, you can guess what I'll do."
She tapped the flat part of her knife on the top of Samuel's head and tilted her head to the side at you. The mask's smile had always been unnerving, but it felt worse looking at it this time.
You turned your gaze toward the ground.
"Wonderful! I'm glad you understand!," she clapped, jumping up and down a few times. "Now question number one: you knew Barney was off when you first met him, didn't you?"
Huh?
"Uh, no?," you responded, slightly relieved she didn't ask a difficult question.
"Yes you did."
"No, I did not notice he was a perverted psycho the first time I met him. I had no idea he was like that!," your voice rose in irritation. Why hadn't she just accepted the answer? What was the point of that question anyway? Maybe this was going to be difficult.
"Fine. Question number two: if Samuel woke up right now, would you want me to knock him unconscious again so he wouldn't have to be put through this?," she chuckled, bending next to him.
