Your mind was still racing as you walked up to the door of your apartment. You had just had a tense conversation with Fyodor and the weight of the mission he had given you was heavy on your shoulders.
"You have one week. One week to get inside that detective boy's head and use his weaknesses to destroy him and the rest of the agency." Fyodor's words were a persistent hum in your thoughts, impossible to ignore.
As you entered the apartment, you could hear laughter coming from the living room, which momentarily distracted you from your thoughts.
But as you stepped into the room, your heart sank. There was Poe, sitting on the couch, with the woman from the other night in his arms, kissing her passionately. It was the same woman that Fyodor had sent from the Menagerie to intimidate you, to remind you of the consequences of betraying him and the rest of the organisation. The woman looked up and greeted you politely, her emerald eyes glinting with mischief.
Your heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, you were frozen in place. You tried to steady yourself, forcing your legs to move forward, but it felt like you were wading through molasses. Poe appeared embarrassed, as if he had been caught doing something he shouldn't have, but was completely clueless about the situation otherwise.
You forced yourself to maintain composure and nodded in greeting to the woman, before you walked away. As you slowly made your way towards the stairs, the woman's eyes followed you, burning into the back of your head. You could feel the poundage of those verdant eyes on your skin, and it made you unwittingly shiver. Ignoring it, you ran up the stairs.
When you got to your room, you slammed the door shut and collapsed onto the bed. You tried to breathe, but you felt like you were drowning. The memories of the Menagerie flooded your mind, and you felt like you were back there—trapped and alone, weak and powerless.
You knew that Fyodor had sent the woman to intimidate you, to remind you of where you came from, and it made you hate him even more than you already did. Taking a deep breath, you lay still and wrapped yourself in the warmth of your blankets, hoping to get a good night's sleep.
Your eyes drooped shut as you began to drift off into a deep sleep, exhaustion finally taking over your body. But instead of a peaceful slumber, you were thrown into a nightmare, a vivid and horrifying flashback that you thought you had long forgotten.
In your mind's eye, you were a little girl again, standing in a dimly lit room with a dead man at your feet. Blood stained your hands and dripped down onto the floorboards. The room was filled with the screams of half-naked women, and you could feel their fear and horror as they rushed in, staring at you with wide eyes. It was a scene straight out of your past, one that you thought you had buried deep down in the recesses of your mind.
