MISTPAW
"Rise and shine, sleepyhead!" Featherlight bounced around her nest cheerfully. The sun was still rising and very few cats were awake. Mistpaw groaned and stuffed her nose deeper in the moss. "Nooooo, Mother, leave me alone, you smell like dung and I don't wanna go!" Featherlight smacked her in the head with her tail and the apprentice leapt up and bared her teeth. "Who dares attack me? If you wanna fight, I'll- oh hey Featherlight."
The silver tabby smoothed down her bristling fur and eyed her mentor with embarrassment. Her pelt felt hot and she tried to hide it by licking one paw and drawing it over her ear. Featherlight sighed mockingly and nudged her apprentice in the side. "You know you couldn't beat me in a fight right now, no matter how hard you try. And for your information, I do not smell like dung." Mistpaw scowled.
"C'mon, we have training to do." She followed Featherlight out of the den and into the main clearing. A strange feeling struck her, like she was being watched. Mistpaw spun around and her green eyes met another pair of cold ones. Firepaw was staring at her darkly, studying her details, as if she were a mouse he was preparing to catch. She hissed at him and turned away, shuffling out of the camp entrance.
The other mentors were already wide-awake while the apprentices kept yawning and snapping awake if they fell asleep. "It's too early." Darkpaw shifted on her paws and blinked away the remaining sleep. Mistpaw flicked her tail and stretched. Darkpaw was right. Who gets up at the crack of dawn just to do some stupid training? Flamepaw was the only cat who didn't look like they would rather be stuck helping grumpy old Alderfrost. She quickly glanced at him and saw that his muscles were tense and his face stared ahead, devoid of any emotion. Poor Flamepaw. What has Thistlefrost been doing to him? He doesn't look like my brother; he looks like a completely stranger.
The murmur died down as Thistlefrost thwacked the ground with his tail. "Today, we will be battle training," The dark grey tom looked around and his gaze rested on Flamepaw. The large red apprentice diverted his gaze from his mentor's piercing gaze. The other apprentices turned and looked at him. Silence descended on the group. Awkward. Thistlefrost continued, "You will be training in pairs. It will help deepen your skills of fighting together when in battle. I will quickly demonstrate."
The tom beckoned to Featherlight and stepped forward. The two started circling each other. Then Thistlefrost suddenly reared up on his back legs and brought his front paws down on Featherlight's head. She stumbled back a few steps and swiped at his back legs, tripping him. Thistlefrost stood up and nodded at her. "I want you all to copy that. Flamepaw and Mistpaw will be together and Violetpaw, Heatherpaw and Darkpaw will practise." Mistpaw nervously scratched her ear.
This was bound to get interesting.
