Sam's POV
I come home to a dark apartment.
"Colby love? You home?"
The lights turn on to reveal a crowd of people in our apartment.
"Surprise!"
Colby comes over to me, a huge smile on his face.
"Happy birthday Sammy!"
He pecks my lips. And forgetting that the room is full of people watching, I pull him closer and deepen the kiss. Several people whistle and I pull away, blushing. He chuckles and puts some music on. I hurry to greet people while he gets the food ready. I open presents and catch up with friends while Colby plays host. Missing him by my side, I head to the kitchen where he is pouring drinks.
"Can you take a short break?" I ask.
"I- uh. Sorry, I've been ignoring you huh? I just wanted to make sure everyone had fun," he says sheepishly.
"Trust me, love. They are. I am too but I want to introduce you to my friends if you're up for it."
"Go, I got this," Nate says.
"I-Alright," he says.
"If it's too much, you don't have to," I say.
"It's okay. I will. Just nervous I guess," he says.
"I've got you," I say, taking his hand and smiling.
I lead him over to my friends and we sit down holding hands. Introductions are made and I can tell he feels overwhelmed. I open my mouth to whisper to him that he can walk away if he needs to but then Corey asks him about his photography and other hobbies. Classic Corey. As Colby talks about what he loves, I can feel him relax and even enjoy himself. I get up to get more drinks and some food but then I hesitate wondering if Colby will be okay for a minute. He meets my eyes and nods, understanding without me saying anything that he noticed my hesitation and that he's okay. I smile and head to the kitchen.
Nate joins me.
"You two are perfect," he says, sighing.
"Nate, are you alright?"
"I guess I just wish that I had what you two have," he says, sneaking a look at someone in the living room.
I follow his gaze and notice someone sitting next to Colby that I've never seen before. Colby must have noticed his gaze because he excuses himself and comes to the kitchen.
"Why haven't you told him yet?" Colby asks.
"You know why I can't," Nate says.
"And I think you're being ridiculous," Colby says.
"I ditched him, Colby."
"No, you left to help me. It's different," Colby says. "He doesn't know does he?"
"I never told him why. And it's too late now," Nate says.
"It's never too late. I mean, just look at me and Colby," I say.
"You don't even know what we're talking about," Nate snarls.
"Don't take it out on him," Colby snaps.
"Colby, it's okay, he's just-"
"No, Colby's right. I shouldn't take it out on you. I'm sorry," Nate says.
"All is forgiven. Colby, stand down. He's upset," I say.
Colby's anger fades. "Sorry, Nate. I just get protective of Sam."
