It was finally Adrien's birthday. As usual, there was a super party planning discussion happening inside the cafeteria, with every person brainstorming ideas. Chloe had changed for the better and the credit goes to one blue-haired boy.
Meanwhile, due to the Agreste and Tsurugi agreement, Adrien had to accompany Kagami frequently. Kagami being the assertive one never left a chance to show her affection for him.
"Perfection calls for perfection," Miss Tsurugi had once quoted, encouraging Kagami.
As usual, Marinette suffered from dizzy spells from time to time, worsening each time.
This time, the whole class (except Adrien) was inside the cafeteria listing out to-dos for his birthday.
Adrien was absent because he was spending his time with his father, or so everyone thought because usually this was the case every year.
Who knew Kagami and Miss Tsurugi were invited to his birthday, and who knew Kagami would be smothering his face with sloppy kisses? Much to Adrien's discomfort.
Gabriel knew the kiss on the lips was dangerous, but maybe on the cheeks, it was not. Clearly, because Emelie was good at hiding her dizzy spells. So, he allowed it, considering it as a friendly affection.
Who was Adrien to say no when he got his father to spend time on that day? It won't hurt.
But somewhere, a girl with pretty bluebell eyes had suddenly lost the balance of her body, and her body had turned cold as ice. The whole cafeteria was chaos when she was admitted into the infirmary.
When Marinette finally woke up, more pale than ever, she told everyone not to mention a single word about this outside the school. Not to others, not to Adrien and not even to her parents. She handled an hour of Alya's scolding. She was happy to have such friends, to forget such a disease.
When the night fell, she was no longer working on her dresses. She was too weak to work on. So, she said on the chaise and coughed a bit, sometimes violently. To get her mind off the misery, she began designing a dress on her sketchpad.
Adrien had to sneak out, so he turned into a cat faster than usual. But his father being strict, forbade him to escape that day.
So, all night with his cat form, he angrily paced around the room. He desperately wanted to visit Marinette. He could sniff and tell something was very wrong.
He had 1 hour more before transforming back into a human. And he wanted to visit her anyhow. It was 3 AM.
So, he silently went out, peeked into his father's room and saw him asleep. Slowly, he sneaked out. He ran towards the familiar bakery, as fast as his paws could take him. Then without wasting his time, he went inside her room.
He expected her to sleep peacefully. His whole body froze when he saw her deathly pale body and her drowsy eyes. Her pencil worked weakly against the paper as she worked on it.
"Marinette!" His loud 'meow' was enough to catch her attention. The cat ran and settled on her lap, taking her face between his paws, and looking directly into her eyes.
Her bluebell eyes didn't shine like they usually did.
"Marinette," He whimpered. His human form would have cried on her shoulders. She didn't deserve to have such an illness. She was too pure for this cruel world.
"Kitty, you came." She whispered. Her voice had lost the energy she had, breaking his heart more.
"I told you not to overwork yourself," He whispered, nuzzling his head on her neck, comforting her. She petted and scratched him lightly, as he melted.
"Don't worry kitty, I will be fine. It's always nice to see so many people concerned for me, even you, little kitty," She giggled. There! Her voice had her usual life in it! He quickly peered into her beautiful eyes and was awed.
There's the bright smile he was used to seeing on this happy soul. Even if she looked pale.
"Today, I had another dizzy spell," That word had frozen whatever happiness he had felt. Another? She never mentioned dizzy spells to his cat self, this was her first.
"Yeah, you must be surprised, I am too. Now they are so frequent, that it feels it has been there forever," She chuckled humourlessly.
He gave a light meow.
"It has been 3 weeks, and they are worsening. I don't know why these are happening. I swear I stopped taking too many orders, but still, it worsens like a concentrated poison," She sighed.
"Today when we were at the cafeteria, I had such a hit of dizzy spell, it felt like someone was hammering my head with it. I was so scared, I still am. But do you know what gives me strength?"
She sighed, and smiled brightly, "My friends, my family, everyone who takes so much care of me, your kitty, ever since you happened in my life, I can always defeat the dizzy spells whatever worse conditions they are. Say kitty, will you stay with me forever?" She nuzzled her nose into his fur, making him purr.
"Always Marinette, you're one of the best things to have ever happened in my life too. I can't imagine a single day without your bright smile, your pretty bluebell eyes, your midnight blue hair—"
Suddenly, his mind drifted to Andre. The first time he went to Andre was the day he was on a photoshoot!
"Blackberries for her hair, and blueberry ice cream just like her sky blue stare!"
Before he could run his thoughts deeper, he saw a bright flash on his paws. He had to leave!
No, Marinette needs me!
But, the curse!
I won't be afraid of the curse anymore. Marinette needs me, I won't leave her!
Still snuggled up to Marinette, hugging her like no tomorrow, the little cat transformed into Adrien, who was now tightly hugging Marinette in his human form.
Marinette had closed her eyes with the sudden bright flash, and when she opened them, she felt a human hugging her warmly. She was frozen, because she could see a lucky charm she knew she had gifted with all her heart.
"Adrien...?"
"Marinette," The boy whispered on her neck, still snuggled up. His body trembled with emotion, afraid that she would reject him for being such a pathetic cursed person—
"You are one sneaky cat, but what just happened?" She enquired curiously.
He finally released her and looked into her eyes, "I— I will tell you everything Marinette, but will we still be—"
"We'll always be friends Adrien, whether you like it or not. Besides, I can't say no to such a cute cat, can I?" She said, smiling playfully.
And so, Adrien told her everything he knew.
